Father of two relies on Cougar Cupboard to stay afloat

Local University Student Relys on Food Pantry to Make Ends Meet.

For Pablo Martinez, life as a single father of two is a constant balancing act. Between childcare, classes, and everyday expenses, money quickly dries up. That's why the Houston resident relies on the Cougar Cupboard, a food pantry at the University of Houston that provides essential groceries to students in need.

The pantry, in partnership with the Houston Food Bank, offers fresh produce and staple items, taking one less worry off Martinez's plate. "The Houston Food Bank is helping my family and I relieve some of that stress that a lot of families feel," he shared his sentiments.

In an effort to help those struggling with hunger, ABC13 has been running its Share Your Holidays food drive for 45 years. Initially conceived as a one-hour TV segment, the initiative has evolved into a city-wide event that brings in millions of cans of food each year since its inception in 1980. As the need continues to grow, there are various ways individuals can contribute.

To make a difference, viewers can simply text "SYH2025" to 71777 or visit the dedicated fundraising page online. Every donation counts in providing vital support for local families like Martinez's, ensuring they have access to basic necessities despite financial constraints.

this is heartbreaking that ppl r struggling so much 2 make ends meet πŸ€• & the university student orginallly comin from a place of privilege now has 2 rely on a food pantry 4 survival it's not just about food, its about dignity & respect 4 every human being

🀯 this is crazy I remember when ABC13 started that Share Your Holidays thing back in '80 and it was just a small TV segment πŸ“Ί but now it's a whole city-wide event and they're collecting millions of cans of food each year πŸ’₯ and the Houston Food Bank is doing some amazing work with the Cougar Cupboard too, I mean who knew universities had food pantries for students struggling to make ends meet? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ as a student myself back in the day (I'm talking '90s/'00s), I never thought about how I'd be able to afford groceries sometimes but it's nice to see that the community is coming together to help those in need πŸ’• we should definitely be supporting our local food banks and initiatives like this, they're making a real difference πŸ™Œ

ugh i just got back from the most random trip to the beach with my dog πŸΆπŸ–οΈ and it made me think about how food pantries are actually kinda awesome πŸ€— i mean don't get me wrong life is hard for single dads like Pablo but sometimes you gotta take a break from worrying about rent/mortgage/experiences πŸŽ‰ and just enjoy the little things... like fresh avocado toast πŸ₯‘πŸ’š

πŸ€” I'm so frustrated that we still have students relying on food pantries in this day and age. It's heartbreaking to think that a university student has to worry about where their next meal is coming from 🍴. The Cougar Cupboard does amazing work, but it can't fill the void of economic instability many families face. We need more support systems in place to help people like Pablo Martinez, who just wants to give his kids a better life without stressing about food on the table πŸ™. I'm happy to donate and spread awareness about the Share Your Holidays initiative - every little bit counts! πŸ’•

Its so amazing that there are ppl out there makin sacrifices 4 their fams & still findin ways 2 help others πŸ€πŸ’•. I mean, who needs a fancy degree when u can change lives with a canned good? πŸŽπŸ‘ The Cougar Cupboard is literally a lifesaver 4 people like Pablo, who are just tryna make ends meet while raisin their little ones. Its heartwarming 2 see ppl from all walks of life comin together 2 make a difference πŸ’–. Plus, the Share Your Holidays food drive has been goin on 4 ages & its clear that it's makin a real impact πŸŽ‰πŸ‘. Every single donation counts, no matter how small it may seem πŸ’Έ. Let's keep spreadin the love & support for these amazing initiatives ❀️!

Can you believe this? People are actually paying their rent with ramen noodles πŸœπŸ˜‚. But seriously, I'm glad there are organizations like the Houston Food Bank and Cougar Cupboard helping out students who are struggling to make ends meet. It's crazy how one person can become a single dad, it's like, where do you even start? 🀣 Meanwhile, I'm over here trying to pay my Netflix subscription on time πŸ“ΊπŸ˜….

πŸ€” It's crazy to think that some students are still struggling to make ends meet with a food pantry as an option. The fact that it's available at the university is definitely helpful, but what about those who can't afford tuition? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ We need more programs in place to support low-income families and help them get back on their feet.

I'm glad the Houston Food Bank is stepping up to help out, but I think we should be looking at ways to prevent people from having to rely on food pantries in the first place. Maybe that means implementing policies like free or reduced-cost meal programs for students and other vulnerable populations?

It's awesome that ABC13 has been running their Share Your Holidays event for so long, and it's great that there are ways for individuals to contribute 🎁. But we need more systemic changes to address the root causes of food insecurity in our community. Let's work together to create a more supportive system for everyone! πŸ’ͺ

πŸ˜” this is just heartbreaking... I mean, think about it, a single dad trying to balance everything and yet he has to rely on a food pantry because life is just too tough πŸ€•... but at the same time, it's amazing that there are people like the Houston Food Bank and ABC13 who care enough to make a difference πŸ’–... and it's not just about donating food, it's about acknowledging that this is a real problem that affects so many families πŸ™... I wish we could all be more supportive of each other during tough times ❀️

I feel so bad for people like Pablo, you know? It's crazy that universities are struggling with students who can't even afford basic groceries πŸ€•. I mean, we should be able to focus on getting our degrees without stressing about where our next meal is coming from πŸ”. The Cougar Cupboard and Houston Food Bank are doing a great job, but more support is needed, like ABC13's Share Your Holidays initiative 🎁. We can all help by donating what we can, even if it's just a few cans of food or a few bucks πŸ’Έ. Every little bit counts, right? And let's hope that universities will start looking into more affordable options for their students soon ⏰.

Ugh, just great. Another student has to deal with being a single dad on a shoestring budget 🀯. I mean, who doesn't love the idea of food banking as a viable solution? It's not like the system is supposed to be set up to help people get back on their feet or anything... But seriously, Pablo Martinez's story is pretty relatable, and it's awesome that there are resources like the Cougar Cupboard in place. Now, can we just talk about how easy it is to donate money and cans of food online? Like, I'm all for sharing your holidays, but where's the personal touch? πŸ€”

I feel bad when I see stories like this. It's just not right that students are having to rely on a food pantry to get by. The Cougar Cupboard is doing an amazing job of helping families in need, but it's not the long-term solution we need. We should be working towards making sure everyone has access to affordable education and resources from the start πŸ€”.

It's great that the Houston Food Bank and ABC13 are teaming up to make a difference, but I wish more people knew about this initiative. Education is key, right? If we can provide students with the support they need to succeed, we can break the cycle of poverty and create a better future for everyone 🌟.

I'm glad Pablo's family will get some extra help from the food pantry, but let's hope that one day, his kids won't have to rely on it in the first place 😊.

omg that's so sad Pablo needs help with everyday expenses πŸ€• his kids must be super stressed about this kinda situation, i feel like there should be more support from the university or government on providing affordable education & resources for students struggling financially πŸ’Έ anyway, I think it's amazing that ABC13 is still running their food drive for 45 years! it shows they care about giving back to the community ❀️ we should all consider donating a can of food or even just spreading awareness πŸ“’

I feel so bad for Pablo Martinez, being a single dad and all πŸ€•, but at least the Cougar Cupboard is there to help him out πŸ™! I mean, food pantries are literally lifesavers, right? And it's amazing that the Houston Food Bank is making such a difference in his life. The Share Your Holidays event has been going on for so long and it's crazy to think it started as just a one-hour TV segment 😲. It's awesome that ABC13 is still bringing attention to this important issue every year. We can all make a difference, even if it's just by texting "SYH2025" πŸ“± or donating online πŸ’Έ. Every little bit counts, and I'm sure Pablo's family will appreciate the help πŸ™Œ!

its crazy how some ppl gotta resort to food pantries just to make ends meet 🀯 i mean, we got university students struggling to afford groceries while their kids are relying on them too? its a real shame πŸ™ that theres still so much inequality in our society. the fact that they're offering fresh produce is awesome tho! but u gotta wonder how many other ppl r strugglin like pablo martinez... i feel bad for him, single dad of two and all that πŸ˜” anyway, shout out to abc13 and the houston food bank for doin somethin right πŸ™Œ

I'm so frustrated that we still need food pantries in the US πŸ€•. I mean, didn't we learn from our past struggles? It's unacceptable that single parents are struggling to put food on the table for their kids. The Cougar Cupboard is definitely doing a great job helping those in need, but it should never be needed in the first place πŸ˜”. We need better economic systems and social safety nets to support people like Pablo Martinez, not just rely on charity 🀝.

It's heartbreaking to think that students at U of H are struggling so much with their finances πŸ€•. I mean, shouldn't we be supporting our young people instead of them relying on food pantries? The Cougar Cupboard is a great resource and all, but it's just not fair that they have to go through this in the first place. On the other hand, I've seen how amazing the Share Your Holidays initiative is - 45 years of making a difference, that's truly inspiring πŸ™Œ. We can all make a difference by contributing even the smallest amount, whether it's a canned good or some spare change πŸ’Έ.

I'm telling you, something fishy is going on here... πŸ€” Like, what's really driving the need for food pantries on college campuses? Is it just a coincidence that these programs are popping up everywhere? I mean, think about it, more and more people are struggling to make ends meet, and suddenly we've got universities setting up food banks for students. It sounds like some kind of systemic thing... maybe a way to control the population or something πŸ˜’. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for helping those in need, but let's not forget there's usually more to it than meets the eye.

I feel so bad for this single dad trying to juggle everything on his own πŸ€•πŸ’Έ. Can you imagine having to worry about where your next meal is coming from? It's heartbreaking that food pantries like the Cougar Cupboard even exist. But at least they're there, right? 😊 I'm glad the Houston Food Bank and ABC13 are teaming up to help out - every bit of support counts! πŸ™Œ If you're feeling generous, tossing in a few cans or donating some cash is a huge help πŸ’–. We should all be doing our part to make sure no one has to rely on these pantries 😊
