Google settles privacy lawsuit for $68m over voice assistant

Google has agreed to pay a hefty sum of $68 million to settle a lawsuit that claims its voice-activated assistant was invading the privacy of smartphone users. The company, which operates under Alphabet Inc., is accused of illicitly recording and disseminating private conversations after being triggered by users' hot words.

The issue at hand revolves around "false accepts," where Google Assistant misinterpreted what users said as "hot words" like "Hey Google" or "OK Google." This resulted in targeted advertising being sent to users, which they deemed intrusive. Smartphone users took this matter to court, alleging that their right to privacy was violated.

Google denied any wrongdoing but ultimately settled the case to avoid the costs and uncertainty of a prolonged litigation process. The Mountain View-based company declined to comment on Monday. Under the settlement, individuals who purchased Google devices or were affected by false accepts since May 18, 2016, are eligible for compensation.

It's worth noting that Apple recently reached a similar $95 million settlement with smartphone users last year. Lawyers representing the plaintiffs may seek up to one-third of the settlement fund, which amounts to approximately $22.7 million, for their legal fees. The decision comes as Google continues to refine its voice assistant technology and strengthen user trust.

I'm kinda surprised that Google settled this lawsuit without a long fight πŸ€”. I mean, they knew they were in the wrong somehow. It's crazy how our conversations can be turned into targeted ads just because of how we say something 😳. I guess it's good that they're finally acknowledging some responsibility and trying to make things right πŸ’―.

But what really gets me is that this lawsuit isn't even about "true" hot words or anything like that πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. It's more about the fact that Google's algorithm is just too picky and can be triggered by, well, anything πŸ˜‚. I mean, who hasn't said something like "Hey Google" in a conversation? πŸ™ƒ

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how this plays out with Apple already having a similar settlement under their belt πŸ‘€. And yeah, the lawyers are gonna get some nice paychecks out of this one πŸ’Έ. Guess you could say justice was served...or at least a pretty hefty check came their way πŸ˜‰

omg i cant believe this 🀯 like google was literally sneaking around listening to our private conversations and sending us creepy ads πŸ“£ ugh that's just so messed up πŸ’” anyway i guess they settled the case because who wants all that drama and stress 😬 and now people can finally get some compensation πŸ’Έ it's not cool that apple got a bigger settlement tho πŸ€‘ but yeah google needs to step up their game when it comes to user privacy 🚫 gotta keep those hot words secure πŸ”’

OMG I'm like so relieved this is finally over πŸ™Œ!! I know some people were totally freaked out about it, but I mean Google was probably just trying to learn from its mistakes πŸ€”. It's crazy how tech companies can use AI for both good and bad, you feel? Anyway, $68 million seems like a pretty big payout to me... like, nice job Google for owning up and paying off the users 😊. And I'm curious, are we gonna see more changes in their voice assistant technology now that they're taking responsibility for this issue πŸ’»?

πŸ€” I mean, can you blame people for feeling like they're being watched all the time when there's an AI-powered assistant like that in your phone? It's not like it's a hard concept to grasp - if my personal conversations are being recorded and used to sell me stuff without my consent, that's basically a violation of my privacy 🚫. And now Google is just paying up instead of risking a PR nightmare in court. It's good they're taking responsibility for it, but at the same time, I wonder how many more people got taken advantage of before this settlement happened πŸ€‘. And it's interesting that Apple settled for less than half as much... maybe Google just didn't want to take that risk πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ.

Ugh, how much money does it take to make people shut up? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ $68 million is basically a drop in the bucket when you think about all the times Google's Assistant has been recording our private conversations without asking πŸ˜’. I mean, who hasn't yelled "Hey Google" at their phone to get some info, only to have it play back and be all like "oh no, you said something hot"? 🀣 Not fun. And now we're supposed to trust that they've fixed the whole problem? πŸ€” I'm skeptical. At least Apple reached out with a similar deal last year... guess someone's finally listening πŸ—£οΈ

πŸ€” just heard about this crazy lawsuit involving Google Assistant 😱 and I gotta say, I'm shocked that it took this long to settle πŸ•°οΈ. But $68 million is a pretty penny πŸ’Έ - hope the users who were affected by false accepts get some serious cash πŸ’Έ. And honestly, Apple's similar settlement last year was way more generous in my opinion πŸ€‘. Maybe Google just didn't want to mess with their lawyers 😬. Anyway, I'm curious to see how they're gonna improve their AI tech so this kind of thing doesn't happen again πŸ€–πŸ’»

omg u won't bliev how much google is payin 4 this lol like 68 mil?! they gotta fix thier algo or smthn 🀯 i mean i get it, ppl wanna be targeted by ads but not w/o their consent πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ it's all about user trust now. and btw apple just set the bar higher w/ a 95 mil settlement πŸ€‘ guess google can't keep up w/ the big g πŸ’Έ

I'm so frustrated about this 🀯. As a parent, I have a young child who uses my phone all the time and relies on Google Assistant to do stuff like set reminders and play music. It's hard enough keeping them safe online without worrying that Big Tech companies are secretly listening in πŸ€”. The thought of Google recording our private conversations just because they misinterpreted something is crazy 😱. I hope this settlement means that Google will be more careful about how it uses our data, especially when it comes to kids like mine who are still learning about online safety πŸ“š. It's a good start, but I want to see more transparency and accountability from these companies πŸ’―.

I'm low-key surprised that Google settled this case so quickly πŸ€”. I mean, it's not like they were hiding anything or didn't know how their AI was working... but still, 68 million bucks is a pretty big price tag to pay for some users' complaints πŸ˜‚. And what really gets me is the "false accepts" thing - if Google can't even get that right, how reliable is their other tech? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ Not that I'm saying they're completely incompetent or anything... but it's just another example of how we're all a little too reliant on these smart devices and AI systems 😊.

I'm kinda surprised that Google settled this case so quickly πŸ€”... I mean, who wouldn't want to just pay off all those people and be done with it? $68 million is a lot of cash πŸ’Έ... but at the same time, I feel like they're basically admitting that their AI tech isn't as secure as they claimed 😬. Like, if you can get caught out by something as simple as "Hey Google", what else are people's private conversations good for? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ But on the other hand, $22.7 million for lawyers' fees is pretty steep, don't you think? πŸ’Έ

omg u guyz lol google just paid 68 mil to settle lawsuit over them invading ppl's privacy thru ther voice assistant idk how they didnt see dis comin w/ all the creepy ppl listenin in on ur convo πŸ€―πŸ’” like wat kinda hot words r we talkin bout here? πŸ˜‚ 'hey google' and 'ok google'?? who thought that was a good idea? πŸ’‘ anywayz i feel bad 4 ppl whos private info got leaked thru ther assistant... hope they get some decent compensation πŸ€‘
