Green Day to open 60th Super Bowl with anniversary ceremony celebrating generations of MVPs

Green Day Set to Rock the 60th Super Bowl Opening with Hometown Tribute to NFL Legends

In a nod to its Bay Area roots, punk rock icons Green Day are being tapped to open the 60th anniversary edition of the Super Bowl. The band will kick off the big game on February 8 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, with an opening ceremony that promises to celebrate six decades of championship history.

As part of the tribute, Green Day will perform a selection of their biggest hits as the league honors its most iconic MVPs. "We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard!" lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong exclaimed. "We are honored to welcome the MVPs who've shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world. Let's have fun! Let's get loud!"

The ceremony, which airs live on NBC, Telemundo, Peacock, and Universo at 3 p.m. Pacific, promises to be a high-energy celebration that will also feature performances by Charlie Puth singing the national anthem, Brandi Carlile belting out "America the Beautiful," and Coco Jones delivering an emotional rendition of "Lift Every Voice and Sing."

For Tim Tubito, senior director of event and game presentation for the NFL, the partnership with Green Day is a key part of the league's efforts to create a unique and memorable Super Bowl experience. "Celebrating 60 years of Super Bowl history with Green Day as a hometown band, while honoring the NFL legends who've helped define this sport, is an incredibly powerful way to kick off Super Bowl LX," he said.

The opening ceremony marks an exciting milestone in the NFL's tradition of high-profile performances and celebratory events. With Green Day at the helm, fans can expect a night filled with music, energy, and a deep respect for the game's rich history.

I don't get why they gotta make a big deal about it 🤔. A punk rock band opening the Super Bowl? I mean, what's next? Are they gonna have a marching band play before the halftime show too? 🎶 And what's with all the hype around Billie Joe Armstrong's comments? He sounds like he's just excited to be playing in front of his friends and family back home. Newsflash: it's not like he's never played at the Super Bowl before! 🙄 Still, I suppose if they're gonna do it, Green Day is a decent choice. At least their music won't put people to sleep 😴.

Ugh, this is gonna be super cheesy... 🤪 Like, I get it, Green Day is from the Bay Area and all that jazz, but do they really have to play some lame stadium anthem just so the NFL can feel good about itself? And what's up with Charlie Puth singing the national anthem? Can't we get someone with a bit more edge to start off the game? 🎸 It's gonna be one of those cringeworthy moments where you're like, "Oh no, not this again..." 💔

🤘 this is gonna be lit! I'm so stoked to see Green Day bring their high-energy vibes to Super Bowl 60 🎉. It's awesome they're giving it up for the NFL legends who've helped shape the game into what it is today 🙌. I mean, who wouldn't want to celebrate six decades of championship history with some sick tunes? 😎 Billie Joe's words just summed it up - let's have fun and get loud! 🤩 The whole ceremony sounds like a party waiting to happen, with great performances from Charlie Puth, Brandi Carlile, and Coco Jones. I'm hyped to see how it all comes together on February 8th at Levi's Stadium 💥
