Lindsey Vonn says she's confident to compete at Olympics despite ACL injury.
In a stunning display of resilience, four-time Olympic medalist Lindsey Vonn announced on Tuesday that she is confident she can participate in the upcoming Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, which begin this week. The American skier suffered a torn ACL from a crash just four days ago and was advised to undergo three days of physical therapy by her doctors.
Vonn's knee, however, showed no signs of swelling as she emerged from a news conference without limping on Tuesday. With the help of a knee brace, Vonn expressed her confidence in competing at the Games, which will feature her favorite disciplines, including women's downhill and super-G.
"My knee is not swollen, and with the help of a knee brace, I am confident that I can compete on Sunday," she stated.
Vonn has faced numerous injuries throughout her career, but this latest setback presents her most significant challenge to date. "This would be the best comeback I've done so far," Vonn said. "Definitely the most dramatic."
The 41-year-old American skier has had an impressive season thus far, leading the World Cup circuit with two victories and three other podium finishes in five races. Her worst finish was fourth.
Teammate Bella Wright expressed faith in Vonn's ability to overcome her injuries through sheer mental determination. "If anyone can do it, it's Lindsey," Wright said.
With the Women's Downhill training session scheduled for Thursday, Vonn will face a tough road ahead if she wants to overcome this injury and compete at the Games. Nevertheless, with her reputation as one of the greatest skiers in history, Vonn remains a dark horse contender to make a stunning comeback.
