Meta is closing down its VR meeting rooms as part of its wider cull

Meta is abandoning its pioneering virtual reality meeting space, Workrooms, as part of a broader consolidation effort within the company. The move marks a significant shift towards integrating its Horizon platform, which is now touted as a robust hub for productivity apps and tools.

In an era of rapidly evolving tech landscapes, Meta's Reality Labs division has faced significant financial challenges since 2021, with losses estimated to exceed $70 billion. In response, the company has opted to rebalance its investments, diverting resources away from metaverse pursuits towards more established markets like wearables, such as its AI-powered Ray-Ban smart glasses.

As part of this restructuring, Meta is discontinuing Horizon managed services, a subscription-based service that facilitates the management of Quest headsets for organizations. Furthermore, the company's decision to close three of its VR studios underscores the growing complexity and uncertainty within the metaverse space.

In essence, Workrooms, launched as an immersive virtual reality environment where teams could collaborate in a novel setting, is no longer deemed necessary with Horizon's capabilities on offer. As users prepare for the app's demise, Meta has set a deadline of February 16, 2026, by which point they will be able to access their data within Workrooms or download it if needed.

its weird how meta just gave up on workrooms lol, i remember hearing about it from friends who used it for virtual meetings and stuff πŸ€”. seems like horizon is trying to fill the gap but idk if its gonna be enough to compete with other productivity tools out there πŸ’». anyway, 70 billion losses is straight up crazy 😳, wonder what went wrong for them πŸ€‘.

I'm kinda surprised about this πŸ€”... meta was all about the metaverse stuff and now it seems like they're backing off on that. i mean, horizon is still a great platform, but can't we just make workrooms work with it instead of killing it altogether? πŸ’Έ it's not like they didn't invest enough in the thing - $70 billion isn't cheap! πŸ€‘ anyway, i guess this is what happens when you try to juggle too many balls at once... time to focus on more solid markets like wearables, right? πŸ‘“πŸ•ΆοΈ

I'm kinda surprised that Meta is ditching Workrooms 😐. It was actually kinda cool back in the day when you could hang out with colleagues in a virtual reality space. But I guess times have changed and they're trying to streamline things 🀯. The thing is, Horizon's getting pretty solid now, so it makes sense for them to focus on that instead of metaverse stuff πŸ“ˆ. Still, it's gonna be weird seeing Workrooms just fade away 🌫️. Anyone know what'll happen to the data from all those virtual meetings? 😳

omg i just got a new pair of gaming headphones and its literally changed my gaming experience 🎧😍 but anyway back to this meta thing... so they're closing down workrooms because horizon is supposed to be the better version now? that's kinda weird, i thought workrooms was like the ultimate virtual meeting space πŸ€”πŸ’» what's the diff btw horizon and workrooms?

Ugh, just another tech giant pivoting away from its ambitious virtual reality dreams 🀯. It's like, I get it, the metaverse space is super complex and uncertain, but can't we try something new for once? 😩 Workrooms was actually kinda cool in a weird way... who wouldn't want to hang out with their team in a VR environment? πŸ€– But I guess that's just too radical for Meta πŸ’Έ. It's like they're abandoning ship on this whole metaverse thing and trying to make it work with their existing Horizon platform 🌐. Not sure if that's gonna fly, but we'll see... Fingers crossed someone else picks up the VR torch πŸ”₯

omg u guyz i dont get why meta is doin this lol they had workrooms and its was literally the best way for me & my squad to collab on projects, now it seems like they're just gonna mash all that functionality into horizon...idk bout u but ima miss workrooms πŸ€”πŸ’» it makes sense i guess tho since reality labs has been losin cash big time πŸ’Έ hope meta comes back strong w/ new updates or smthn πŸ’•

I gotta wonder, what does this say about our obsession with virtual reality? We're so caught up in creating these immersive spaces that we forget the very people who are supposed to make them work together... themselves. It's like, we're building this elaborate facade of collaboration and productivity, but is it just a reflection of our own insecurities or lack of human connection? I mean, think about it, when was the last time we actually had a real, face-to-face conversation without distractions like VR or phones? We need to be careful not to confuse virtual with real... πŸ€”πŸ’»

πŸ€” Meta's decision is no surprise, VR tech has been struggling since 2021 πŸ“‰. They need to cut losses & focus on wearables where profit margins are higher πŸ’Έ. Still, I'll miss Workrooms - who needs a fancy virtual space when you can just video call? πŸ˜‚

omg u guys!! i cant believe meta is axing workrooms 🀯 thats like, the OG virtual reality meeting space lol what happened?? i was all about workrooms when it first dropped but idk if horizons gonna be enough to fill that void πŸ€” meta's been throwing caution to the wind with their metaverse plans and now they're reaping the benefits πŸ€‘ of course, we gotta feel for the users who invested time & resources into workrooms πŸ’Έ hope they get a smooth transition tho πŸ’•

omg u guys, i just read that meta is shutting down workrooms 🀯 what does this mean for us? like, we were all so stoked about virtual reality meetings and now it's just...bye Felicia πŸ˜’. but honestly, i think its not surprising considering how much money they've lost on metaverse stuff. its just a big experiment that didn't quite work out πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. and imo, meta is being super smart by focusing on wearables instead - who needs VR when u have smart glasses? πŸ•ΆοΈ anyway, idk what the future holds but i guess we'll just have to wait and see how horizon turns out πŸ‘€

πŸ€” just wondering why meta is giving up on workrooms, feels like a step back in the virtual team collaboration space... think there's still value in having a dedicated VR space for remote teams πŸ’» πŸ‘₯

I've been saying this for ages, but I think Meta got ahead of itself with VR. They were trying too hard to revolutionize the metaverse and ended up burning through a ton of cash πŸ€‘. Now they're having to scale back and focus on what actually works. It's kinda sad, though - Workrooms was an awesome concept, and it would've been sick to see more people using it for remote team meetings 🀝. I guess you can't have everything at once, right? The Horizon platform is still solid, but it's just not the same as having a dedicated space like Workrooms 😐.

πŸ€” I'm not surprised to hear that Meta is scrapping its VR meeting space Workrooms 🚫. It's been a bit of an experimental phase for them, and with the metaverse space getting increasingly saturated, they gotta focus on what's working πŸ’Έ. Integrating Horizon into their platform makes total sense - it's got some solid tools already πŸ”§. But, it's sad to see Workrooms go πŸŽ‰... I've heard some great collaborations happen in that space 🀝. Guess we'll just have to wait and see how this whole metaverse thing plays out πŸ’».

It's kinda sad when companies have to let go of something that once felt so innovative & exciting πŸ€”. Like, remember how people used to get hyped about VR meetings? πŸ˜‚ Now it seems like those pioneers are getting phased out. It's all about rebalancing investments & focusing on what works, I guess. But the thing is, sometimes you gotta acknowledge when something that was once cool isn't cool anymore πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. Workrooms might not be around, but it's still a reminder that even the most promising ideas can have a limited shelf life ⏰. It's up to us as consumers & users to make sure we're not just holding onto things out of nostalgia, but actually using what makes sense for our needs πŸ“ˆ.

omg, i remember when workrooms first launched 🀯 i was super excited about the potential of virtual reality in the workplace, but now that meta's pulling out... i'm kinda surprised lol? didn't they think it'd be a game-changer? anyway, it makes sense to consolidate their efforts and focus on more established markets. wearables are definitely the future πŸ”πŸ‘€ but still sad to see workrooms go πŸ’” hope people get their data before it's too late πŸ•’οΈ

I think this is kinda crazy... like, what happened to all that hype around virtual reality? It seemed so promising at first, but now it's just being phased out in favor of a more established platform πŸ€”. The metaverse space is already super competitive, and I'm surprised Meta didn't see this coming earlier. They're basically saying that their new Horizon platform is enough to replace the need for Workrooms... but what about all the other platforms trying to do the same thing? It just feels like another layer of complexity to navigate πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ.

umm so like what's going on here? πŸ€” meta's gotta cut ties with its own virtual reality space thingy... i get that tech is always changing and stuff but $70 billion in losses?? that's wild πŸ’Έ anyway, so they're just gonna merge all the things into one platform now which seems kinda redundant since horizon already has a lot of productivity apps built in 🀯 plus it makes sense they'd wanna focus on wearables like those ray-ban smart glasses cuz at least that's somethin people actually wanna buy πŸ˜’ guess it's not surprising they're closin down some studios tho... i mean, the metaverse space is just so confusing right now πŸ€”πŸ’»

ugh, this is so sad πŸ€• I loved using workrooms for virtual team meetings with my friends and family... it was like we were all in the same room even though we were thousands of miles apart. now i'm not sure what's going to happen to those old connections we made πŸ€” and i hope meta finds a way to keep some of that magic alive, maybe integrate workrooms into horizon or something? 🀞
