MI5 'very relaxed' about proposed Chinese super-embassy in London, sources say

Britain's spy agency MI5 is "very relaxed" about a proposed Chinese super-embassy in London, according to sources. The embassy, which would be constructed at Royal Mint Court near Tower Bridge, has sparked concerns over espionage risks and the potential for increased surveillance.

The Security Service was briefed on the plans during a private meeting with House of Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle in the summer. According to those who attended, MI5 officers indicated that they could manage the espionage risks associated with the 20,000 sq metre embassy. The agency has long experience dealing with national security threats posed by foreign embassies.

The existence of the super-embassy has been contentious, with opponents citing concerns over security, traffic and safety implications for local residents. Critics have also questioned the optics of allowing China to build its largest diplomatic outpost in London.

However, former senior British intelligence officers suggest that a large embassy could be an opportunity for potential surveillance. Richard Moore, who stepped down as chief of MI6 this month, indicated that a compromise on the size and scope of the embassy was likely, saying "the size of the embassy is immaterial".

Nigel Inkster, a senior adviser at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, pointed out that many countries now avoid spying from diplomatic outposts due to advancements in surveillance technology. China also recruits people online, with MI5 recently warning MPs and peers about two LinkedIn headhunters suspected of working on behalf of the Chinese government.

The decision on whether to approve the super-embassy is expected by 10 December, following delays that have drawn criticism from Beijing, which has threatened to block extensive renovation works at its own embassy in London unless its plans are accepted.

Ugh, gotta set the record straight... πŸ™„ So, I heard MI5 is like "relaxed" about this super-embassy thing? Like, what's next, people being calm about a bunch of Russian hackers just chillin' at the Kremlin? πŸ˜’ Seriously though, it doesn't sound good. The whole idea of a 20,000 sq metre embassy is already sketchy, and now they're saying they can handle espionage risks? Give me a break... πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ Richard Moore's comment about the size being "immaterial" is just mind-blowing. Who says that? Like, what exactly do you get from building a 20,000 sq metre embassy if it's not gonna be some major surveillance hub? πŸ€”

πŸ€” I don't get why there's so much fuss about this embassy πŸ›οΈ. Like, it's not like they're gonna spy on everyone or something πŸ˜’. China's got a right to have an embassy too, and if it's just a normal building with some security measures, what's the big deal? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I mean, we've got our own CIA and NSA over there πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ, so I'm not sure why China's gotta be so secretive about their espionage risks πŸ˜’. And can we talk about how convenient it is for them to say they'll compromise on the size? Like, that's just a nice way of saying they're gonna build something big and spy on everyone πŸ€ͺ.

omg u think china building a huge spy agency in london w/out anyone getting all up in arms over it is kinda suspicious lol. i mean dont get me wrong, china is def a superpower now & espionage is just part of the game, but mi5 seems pretty chill about it? like r u guys just gonna let them build a 20k sq meter spy agency near tower bridge w/o even flinching?

i feel like we should be more concerned about this than just security risks. think about all the ppl who work in london, from journalists to activists, its like theyre gonna have their every move monitored by the chinese govt? and whats with all these critics saying china isnt allowed to build a huge embassy? doesnt that just sound like an excuse for china 2 b all up in our grill?

anywayz i guess only time will tell wether mi5 is right or wrong about this, but one thing thats for sure: china building a spy agency near tower bridge would be lowkey super creepy πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™€οΈπŸ˜³

lol what's up with this UK gov? πŸ€” they're basically saying it's cool for China to build the biggest spy agency in London, no big deal 😎. I mean, 20k sq meters is a lot of space to store all that espionage equipment... plus the traffic and safety concerns are just minor issues, right? πŸš—πŸ˜‚. But seriously, it's like they're not taking this at all seriously. They should be worried about being spied on by China lol. And what's up with this "size is immaterial" comment from Richard Moore? dude, that's like saying a giant billboard in the middle of London won't affect the local vibe πŸ“£. Anyway, I hope someone has some sense and rejects this proposal before it's too late... fingers crossed! 🀞

πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ So, no big deal if China just builds a giant spy hub in the middle of London, right? I mean, we've got nothing to worry about when it comes to espionage risks or surveillance... πŸ™„ Who needs a secure embassy when you can just have a 20k sq metre building that's basically a giant office with some fancy security cameras and a few "accidental" leaks to China? 😏 And honestly, who cares if it's a bit of an eyesore for the locals? It's not like we're going to start charging them rent or anything... 🀣

I'm low-key shocked they're not taking this more seriously 🀯 Like, 20k sq meters of super-embassy in the middle of London? That's a recipe for disaster! 🚨 I mean, Richard Moore saying size is immaterial just glosses over the bigger picture. What about all the potential surveillance and espionage risks? shouldn't that be the top priority? πŸ’‘ And what about the optics? It's already gonna be a huge symbol of China's growing influence in Europe...let's not give 'em an open invitation πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

I just had the craziest thought while reading about this... have you ever noticed how weird it is when people take selfies in front of a bridge? Like, what's so interesting about the bridge itself that they need to document it on camera? I saw someone do it last weekend and I was like, "Uh, okay, sure." It just seems like something we all do without thinking about it too much... πŸ€”πŸ“Έ

πŸ€” I think this is a big deal! Did you know that China already has 105 embassies worldwide, with the US having around 50? πŸ—ΊοΈ The super-embassy would be HUGE, covering an area of 20,000 sq meters. That's roughly the size of 4 football pitches! 🏟️

According to a report by the University of Warwick, China has invested over $10 billion in espionage activities worldwide since 2011. πŸ’Έ That's more than double what the US has spent on its own spy agency, CIA! πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

Here's a chart comparing the number of embassies and diplomatic missions from different countries:

| Country | Number of Embassies |
| --- | --- |
| China | 105 |
| US | 50 |
| Russia | 27 |
| India | 22 |

I'm not saying MI5 is wrong to think they can manage the espionage risks, but we do need to consider the bigger picture. 🀝

idk why ppl r so worried bout dis new chinese embassy lol its like they're expectin china 2 invade london or somethin' richard moore said da size dont matter yawn...but seriously, china's been buildin up their espionage game online 4 yrs now & it's getting scary nigel inkster's right we cant just trust ppl 2 behave cuz china's got its own way of doin tings πŸ€”πŸ‘€

πŸ€” so china's gonna build this huge embassy and mi5 is like "no worries, we got this"? πŸ™„ what exactly would they do with a 20k sq meter building tho? it sounds like more spy drama than actual espionage πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ anyway, wouldn't it be better to have smaller embassies that blend in instead of super-sized ones that scream "we're watching you" πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ and btw, what's with all the online recruitment by china? is it really hard for them to find decent people or do they just want to snoop on us more πŸ˜’

Just wondering, why do we need so much space for a super-embassy? πŸ€” Can't they just make it smaller and more discreet? 🏒 The whole thing is making me nervous, like they're hiding something... πŸ‘€ MI5 saying they can handle the espionage risks, but what if they can't? What about all those people living nearby who might get affected? 🚨 It's like we're playing with fire here... πŸ”₯

πŸ€” Come on, MI5, you're relaxed about a giant Chinese spy hub in the heart of London? I'm sure it's just a coincidence that China is also super into recruiting people online and using social media to get info πŸ“ŠπŸ‘€. And what's with the "size of the embassy is immaterial" comment from Richard Moore? Sounds like he's been sipping on too much tea with his old pals in Beijing β˜•οΈπŸ€. I mean, can't they just keep their espionage games to themselves and not build a 20,000 sq metre super-embassy as some kinda trophy πŸ›οΈπŸ’₯? And let's be real, who needs more traffic congestion in London anyway? πŸ˜‚

πŸ€” I mean, come on... a 20,000 sq meter embassy? It's not like it's going to be some kinda surveillance state or something 🚫. MI5 is like "we got this" and now Beijing is all stressed out πŸ™„. Can't we just let them build their own embassy without making such a big deal about it? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I mean, what's the real concern here? Is it just a matter of optics or are there actual security risks involved? πŸ‘€

I mean, can you imagine having a super-sized Chinese embassy built right next to Tower Bridge? It's like they're trying to give us all a warm welcome... to the world of espionage! πŸ˜‚ I'm not saying it's a bad thing or anything (just kidding), but with those 20,000 sq metre walls, I'm pretty sure MI5 has just become the ultimate game of hide-and-seek experts. The question is, will they be able to keep their cool and not get too "spooked" by all that Chinese charm? πŸ€”

I'm so over this new development with the proposed Chinese super-embassy in London. I mean, come on! MI5 is just "very relaxed" about it? That's not reassuring, mate πŸ€”. What if they're just trying to downplay the risks of espionage and surveillance? It's like they're playing a game of diplomatic poker where the stakes are our national security πŸƒ.

And don't even get me started on Richard Moore saying "the size of the embassy is immaterial" πŸ˜’. Like, what does that even mean? Are they trying to sugarcoat something? And Nigel Inkster's warning about China recruiting people online is totally valid – we should be super cautious here 🚨.

I'm worried that if this super-embassy gets approved, it'll set a bad precedent and create more opportunities for China to snoop around. I mean, who needs that kind of tension in our city? Not me, that's for sure πŸ˜’. Can't we just get some clarity on this one before the 10th of December? 🀞
