New York City students to attend classes online Monday, as winter storm wallops the region

Winter Storm Brings Remote Learning to NYC Schools

A snowstorm that dumped over half a foot of snow on the Big Apple prompted New York City's public schools to cancel classes and switch to online learning for most elementary and middle schools, leaving approximately 500,000 students in the dark.

The decision comes as high school students were already scheduled to be off for a teacher professional development day. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels announced the change in plans on Sunday, citing hazardous conditions and a need to prioritize student safety.

While some parents and kids may have been looking forward to a snow-day, officials said the tight calendar made it impossible to accommodate remote learning for all students. "We know this may disappoint some of our students," Samuels acknowledged earlier this week. "But we're committed to making sure they still get their education."

The education department has reportedly held simulations and stress tests to ensure a smooth transition to online learning, after parents faced difficulties getting online during a similar snowstorm two years ago.

For now, students will be joining classes remotely, with all after-school, adult education, and school-based programs also canceled. Parents can rest easy knowing that their kids' devices are ready for remote learning, thanks to the administration's efforts to prepare ahead of time.

As the city navigates this winter storm together, officials are urging everyone to stay safe and warm – even if it means a day indoors instead of in the snow.

I mean, online school on a snow-day? It just doesn't feel right 😐. I get that safety is the top priority, but can't they just give the kids a real break? Like, have you ever tried to watch your kid's face light up when they're stuck inside on a snow day... it's priceless! 🤣 But seriously, what's next? Are they gonna make us all go back to school during recess too? ⏰ I'm just not buying the whole remote learning thing. It's all so convenient for the administration, but what about the kids who need human interaction and hands-on learning? 🤔

omg i hate when schools cancel classes because of weather 🌨️ it's like they always say remote learning is a great idea but let's be real it's just not the same as being in class with your friends 😔 i mean don't get me wrong i'm all for student safety and all that jazz but can't we just make sure everyone has reliable wifi and devices beforehand? 🤦‍♀️ i swear if i had to do online learning again without a solid plan it would be super frustrating 💻 anyway hope the kids are doing okay and that the snow melts soon ❄️

I think its pretty cool that NYC schools decided to switch to remote learning during the snowstorm 🌨️, especially considering how tight their schedule is. I mean, its great that they're prioritizing student safety, but I'm also sure some kids were looking forward to a snow-day 😐. At the same time, I get why they couldn't accommodate everyone - those sim tests and stress tests must have been super helpful in preparing them for this situation 💻. Its great that parents' devices are ready for remote learning now too 🎉. I just hope all the staff at the schools stay safe and warm during this winter storm ❄️.

I'm not sure I love the idea of remote learning in the middle of a snowstorm 🌨️. Don't get me wrong, safety is priority no. 1, but can't we just give kids (and parents) a break and have a real snow day for once? 😊 I mean, it's not like they're going to miss out on too much material in one day. And what about the kids who don't have devices or internet access at home? It feels like a lot of prep went into making sure everything was ready, but not necessarily enough thought put into how this would affect everyone. 🤔

man thats weird they cancelled classes cuz of some snow like isnt that what its for lol 🌨️ anyway i guess its good they prepared ahead of time and all the parents kids devices r ready 500k students tho thats a lot of kids stuck at home lol maybe its not so bad though they get to have a snow day albeit online 😂
