NYPD shoots and injures man with knife inside Queens home, officials say

New York Police Department Shoots Man Wielding Knife in Queens Home

A dramatic confrontation unfolded at an apartment building in the Briarwood section of Queens Monday morning when police officers responded to a 911 call reporting a man throwing glass inside his home. The situation escalated when the man allegedly retrieved a large kitchen knife and charged towards the officers, prompting them to open fire.

According to Assistant Chief Christopher McIntosh of the NYPD's Queens Borough South command, the suspect had a history of mental illness, but that did not appear to affect his actions as he advanced on the officers with the knife. The police gave repeated commands for him to drop the knife, but the man refused, pushing through a door and continuing towards them.

One officer then fired several shots, striking the suspect in the body. He was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he underwent surgery and is currently in stable condition.

The NYPD says all interactions with the suspect were recorded on body-worn cameras, which will be reviewed by the department's Force Investigation Division as part of an ongoing assessment of the incident. As for now, the identity of the man has not been publicly disclosed.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed commitment to transparency, saying "we are committed to keeping New Yorkers informed as we learn more." The area remains under lockdown, with police urging residents to stay away and expecting traffic delays in the vicinity.

omg what a wild morning ๐Ÿคฏ the cops got all intense like that for no reason tho? i mean i get it if someone's being violent or threatening but throwing glass is not gonna take anyone down ๐Ÿ˜‚ also why did they have to shoot him with all those shots?! wasn't one enough? didn't they have any other options? and what's up with the body-cam footage, hopefully it shows some real police brutality ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ˜ฑ just heard about this crazy situation in Queens where the cops shot a guy wielding a knife ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ’ช at his own home! ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ˜ฒ I don't know what's more shocking, the fact that he pulled out a knife or that he went for the cops with it ๐Ÿ˜ฒ๐Ÿ‘Š. Mental health is so important and we need to talk about it more ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’•. I hope the guy recovers from his injuries ๐Ÿ’ซ and this whole incident doesn't traumatize his family too much ๐Ÿ˜”. The NYPD needs to review all the footage from body cams though, that's gotta be super helpful in figuring out what went down ๐Ÿ“น๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Fingers crossed for a safe and peaceful resolution! โœŒ๏ธ

๐Ÿค” I mean, it's crazy how things can escalate so fast. I've seen vids of this incident and it looks like the cops really tried to de-escalate the situation but the guy just kept coming at them. You gotta feel for both sides, though - the cops had no idea what they were up against and the guy was clearly in a bad state.

But at the same time, I think we need to ask some tough questions about how this happened in the first place. Like, what's going on with our mental health system? How can we prevent situations like this from happening in the future? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

man this is so freakin crazy ๐Ÿคฏ, i cant believe cops just shot some dude in his own home... like what were they supposed to do? the man had a knife and was charging at them... you can understand why theyd want to protect themselves but still its super scary for the neighbors and all that traffic delay... ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’จ

idk about this, another case of police using force and it's all on body cam vids ๐Ÿค”. what if the guy wasn't armed and just had a kitchen knife out? we don't even know his story or why he was acting like that... and now the cops are saying they gave commands to drop it but maybe not clearly enough? this is all so suspicious ๐Ÿ˜’. and can we please talk about how quickly the media jumps to conclusions here? "suspicious" doesn't mean anything in this context ๐Ÿ“ฐ. just wanna see more info before jumping to conclusions... or maybe that's just me being paranoid ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

this is getting out of hand... we need better de-escalation techniques for cops & ppl with mental health issues. a few shots aren't gonna make someone drop a knife they're holding onto for their life ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ’” what's wrong with taking a deep breath, calling for help, or talking it through? all this violence & aggression is exhausting... we need to rethink our approach to crisis management & mental health support ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ

Man, it's just so sad when this stuff happens ๐Ÿค•... I mean, you gotta feel for that guy who had a history of mental illness and was having a rough morning. Can't we all just have one of those days where everything goes wrong? And then the cops show up and... well, it's like they're trying to protect us, but sometimes these situations can be so complicated ๐Ÿค”.

I'm just hoping that the guy who got shot is going to be okay, 'cause at the end of the day, we're all human beings here. We all make mistakes, and we all need a little help sometimes ๐Ÿ˜ž. It's not like this guy was trying to hurt anyone; he was just having a rough morning.

And what's up with the body-worn cameras, though? Like, it's great that they're recording everything, but at the same time, you gotta wonder how much of it is going to be shown to the public. I mean, we all want transparency, but sometimes we don't know what we want until we see it ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

Anyway, my thoughts are with the guy who got shot, and his family, and everyone in Queens who's just trying to live their lives without any drama ๐Ÿ’”.

I MEAN, THIS IS SUCH A TENSE SITUATION UNFOLDING IN QUEENS!!! ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’ฅ I FEEL FOR THE GUY WHO WAS SHOT BY THE POLICE, THOUGH - MENTAL ILLNESS IS NO JOKE AND WE NEED TO BE MORE EMPATHETIC WHEN DEALING WITH PEOPLE LIKE HIM. IT'S NOT ABOUT THE KID WIELDING A KNIFE, IT'S ABOUT HELPING HIM GET THE HELP HE NEEDS ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’•. AND CAN YOU BELIEVE THEY'RE LOCKING DOWN THE WHOLE NEIGHBORHOOD?! I FEEL FOR THE RESIDENTS WHO HAVE TO DEAL WITH THIS TRAFFIC CHAOS AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS DRILLS ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿšจ. I JUST HOPE THE OFFICIALS IN CHARGE TAKE A DEEP BREATH, REVIEW THE BODY-WORN FOOTAGE, AND GET TO THE BOTTOM OF WHAT REALLY HAPPENED HERE ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’ป.

can u believe this guy was carrying a knife and acting all psycho at his own home? like what's next? his neighbor callin the cops on him for makin too much noise? lolol this is gonna get good though ๐Ÿคฃ meanwhile, i'm over here thinkin why do ppl got so many knives in their homes? is it 4 showoff or somethin? or r we all just forgettin how to resolve conflicts like normal humans? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ and btw what's with the lockdown? cant ppl just chill at home for once?

Man... this is so crazy ๐Ÿคฏ! I was just thinking about that movie 'Training Day' where Denzel Washington's character goes rogue on his partner - this whole situation feels like it came straight out of a Hollywood thriller ๐ŸŽฅ But for real though, you can't imagine the fear those cops must've been in. Like, they're trained to handle these situations but when it comes down to it, life or death is always at play ๐Ÿ’” And poor guy on the other side... mental health issues and everything... can you even blame him? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ The fact that his past was known but he just lost control like that though... it's heartbreaking ๐Ÿ˜” Anyway, fingers crossed the dude makes a full recovery.

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’” just heard about this crazy incident in Queens... some guy was having a mental breakdown and ended up charging at cops with a knife ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ˜ฑ they shot him but he's stable now ๐Ÿ™ can't believe how traumatic that must be for his family ๐Ÿ’• the thing is, it makes me think about all these other stories of people with mental illness struggling to get help ๐Ÿ˜” and what if the cops didn't have body cams? would we ever know what really went down? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ this is why I always say bad news never ends...
