Our American Queen review – ambition and allegiance on the eve of 1864 US election

A new American Queen has emerged, but is it a strong contender for historical drama supremacy? This Brooklyn-based production from The American Vicarious tries to tackle the untold story of Kate Chase, the daughter of Salmon P. Chase, the Secretary of the Treasury under President Abraham Lincoln. The play raises intriguing questions about female power, ambition, and the psychological fallout of an emotionally distant father.

However, beneath its ambitious scope lies a script that struggles to weave its threads into a cohesive narrative. Thomas Klingenstein's writing often meanders into the weeds of the American Civil War, diluting the tension in the dense dialogue. The play's director, Christopher McElroen, fails to inject much wit or banter to lift the conversation, leaving Kate's intellect and political prowess confined to the confines of her domestic sphere.

The real showstopper is the complex relationship between Kate and John Hay, played by Tom Victor and Wallis Currie-Wood respectively. Their flirtatious sparring and underlying chemistry are expertly captured, bringing a spark of vulnerability to Kate that later ignites a firestorm of repressed emotions. Darrell Brockis brings a sense of gravitas as Salmon P. Chase, even if his accent occasionally falters.

Despite its strong performances, the play stumbles in its portrayal of real-world actions and motivations. The line between fiction and fact becomes increasingly blurred, leaving audiences uncertain about what truly drove this formidable woman. Ultimately, the production's biggest challenge lies in balancing Kate's fictional narrative with the harsh realities of her historical context.

I dunno if I'd say it's a total bust or not 🤔... The chemistry between Kate and John is def on point and those performances are giving me all the feels 😍... But at the same time, I feel like they're trying to tackle some heavy themes that aren't exactly well-executed. It's like, I get that Kate was a strong woman and all, but it's hard for me to connect with her when the script is kinda meandering and can't seem to find its footing 🤷‍♀️... And don't even get me started on the historical accuracy - it's like they're trying to fit too many pieces into a puzzle that just doesn't quite fit 📝... Still, I'd love to see them try again with some tweaks and adjustments 🔄... Maybe next time, they can really nail it 💪

OMG 🤯 I'm so down for a strong female lead in historical dramas! 🙌 But, tbh, I'm not sure if this play is gonna make it to the top 🤔 Kate Chase seems like such an intriguing character, but that script... *sigh* 😩 43% of audience members reported feeling meh about the pacing 📊. The chemistry between Tom & Wallis tho 💘 - their scenes together had me on the edge! 👀

Let's talk numbers... 👥 Average ticket price was $75, and we sold out every performance... 🎟️ But if we analyze the reviews... 🤔 56% of critics gave it a mediocre rating ⭐⭐️. Not to mention, our box office sales were off by 32% compared to the average historical drama production 💸.

I mean, I'm all for exploring lesser-known historical figures 👩‍💻 but we gotta get the facts straight 💡 Darrell Brockis's performance aside... 🙌 even he mentioned that the script was a bit of a challenge to work with 😬. Overall, it's like we're still trying to figure out how to make this story work 🔍

I'm a bit meh on this new American Queen production 🤔👑. I mean, the idea of exploring the untold story of Kate Chase is really interesting, but the execution feels kinda messy 🤷‍♀️. The writing's all over the place and it's like they're trying to fit too many plot threads together at once. It's hard for me to get invested in Kate's story when the dialogue feels so dense and slow-paced 😴.

But the chemistry between Tom Victor and Wallis Currie-Wood as John Hay is on point 🔥👫! They have that spark that makes you root for them, even if it's just a fictional romance 💌. And Darrell Brockis brings a lot of depth to Salmon P. Chase, but I wish they'd done more with his character beyond just his accent 😊.

What really gets me is how much they gloss over the historical context and motivations of Kate's actions 👎. It feels like they're trying to fit her into this narrative that doesn't quite fit 🤷‍♀️. As a DIY enthusiast, I love experimenting with new ideas and fixing things that don't work 😊. Maybe The American Vicarious will take some feedback from critics like me and go back to the drawing board 👍?

idk how much more you can fit into a play without making it feel like a chore to watch lol 🤣 anyway i think they need to focus on kate's character development more, like make her more than just "emotional" and stuff... and btw, john hay's chemistry with wallis is REAL, but they should've done more scenes between them tbh 📚

🤔 I gotta say, I was really intrigued by the idea of this new play about Kate Chase - sounds like a fascinating story! 📚 But honestly, I felt like it missed the mark a bit. The acting was on point though, especially between Tom Victor and Wallis Currie-Wood as John Hay - that chemistry was electric 🔥! And Darrell Brockis brought some serious gravitas to the role of Salmon P. Chase. 👏

But what really got me was how they handled the historical stuff. I mean, it's one thing to dramatize a story for the stage, but when you're dealing with real people and events, it can be tricky to walk that line between fact and fiction. I feel like they kinda lost their footing there. 🤦‍♀️ Still, I'd love to see how this production evolves and if they find a way to balance it all out! 🎭

I'm still on the fence about this new American Queen series 🤔. I loved the premise, especially how it explores female power and ambition during a time when women had so little say. But, oh man, that script needed some serious tightening up 📝. The Civil War stuff just felt like filler to me, you know? And I wish they'd added more snarky banter between Kate and John Hay - their chemistry was definitely the highlight of the show for me 😍. Darrell Brockis as Salmon P. Chase was great, even if his accent did slip up a bit sometimes 🙃. What really bugged me though was how the play blurred the lines between fact and fiction. I get that it's hard to condense centuries of history into 90 minutes, but some clarity would've been nice 💡. Still, Wallis Currie-Wood and Tom Victor were absolute stars as Kate and John Hay - those performances lit up the whole production 🌟

idk man... i mean i gotta say i was hyped for this show but it kinda fell flat for me 🤕. they got some amazing talent on board like tom victor and wallis currie-wood but even that couldn't save the script from being super meh. the writer just kept going back to the civil war and it felt like they were trying too hard to fit in all these historical events. and omg don't even get me started on the chemistry between kate and john hay... it was SOO good but i feel like they wasted it by not exploring it more throughout the whole show 🚫

🤔 this show is like watching a tape record - it starts off alluring but gets fuzzy after a bit... they need to tighten up that script & add some fire to those one-liners 👊

I THINK THE PRODUCTION IS GOING FOR A BIG BANG BUT ENDS UP GETTING LOST IN ALL THE DETAILS 🤯 ITS LIKE THEY WANTED TO COVER EVERYTHING ABOUT KATE CHASE AND HER LIFE SO MUCH THAT THEY FORGOT TO MAKE IT WORK 💔 I MEAN, THE ACTORS ARE TALENTED DON'T GET ME WRONG, TOM VICTOR AND WALLIS CURRIE-WOOD AS JOHN HAY ARE ON POINT 🤩 BUT THE STORY JUST NEEDS A FEW EDITS TO GET ALL THE PEGS IN PLACE 👍

🤔 I gotta say, this new play is all over the place for me... 🚮 it's got some great performances, especially between Tom Victor and Wallis Currie-Wood as Kate and John Hay - that chemistry is real 🔥! But at times, it feels like they're trying too hard to recreate history instead of letting the story breathe. And don't even get me started on the dialogue 🗣️ it's all over the map. 3/5 stars, I guess... 👎

I'm not sure if I'd go crazy for this new play just yet 🤔. On one hand, I love how they're tackling a lesser-known story and exploring themes that are still super relevant today. But at the same time, the script can feel like it's meandering through some pretty dense stuff 📚. And don't even get me started on how hard it is to separate fact from fiction – sometimes you just want to shout "what really happened?!" 👀. The cast does a great job of bringing the characters to life, but I think they're going to have to do more than just shine in the supporting roles to really make this production sing 💫.

🤔 I just saw this play and I gotta say, it had some interesting moments 📚 but overall felt kinda meh to me... I mean, we're talking about a powerful woman like Kate Chase here who could've been so much more than just a footnote in history 💁‍♀️. The chemistry between the leads was palpable 👫 and Tom Victor's John Hay had some great one-liners 😂. But the whole thing felt a bit disjointed, like they were trying to tackle too many threads at once 🌐. And I'm not sure if it's just me but sometimes I felt like we were getting more of a soap opera drama than actual historical accuracy 📺... still worth watching for fans of period dramas and strong women in history 🎬👏

I just watched this new play about Kate Chase and I'm still trying to figure out if it's a total win or a huge mess 🤔 The performances are top-notch, especially Wallis Currie-Wood as Kate - she brings so much depth and nuance to the character! But I gotta say, the script is a bit of a hot mess. It's like they got lost in all the historical details and forgot about pacing 😅 And don't even get me started on how they handled her dad's emotions towards her... it just didn't feel authentic at all 🤷‍♀️ Still, I love that we're talking about female power and ambition on stage - it's so refreshing! Maybe with some more refinement and attention to historical accuracy, this play could really shine 🌟

I'm kinda meh on this new play. I mean, the story of Kate Chase is super interesting and all that, but the script feels like it's trying too hard to be complex 🤔. It's like they're trying to pack in too many threads at once and it just gets messy. And yeah, Darrell Brockis' performance as her dad is great 👏! But for me, the real magic happens when Kate and John Hay share their scenes together 💘. Their chemistry is undeniable and it makes you wanna root for them. However, I wish they would've been more clear on what's fact and what's fiction - it feels like they're trying to balance two different worlds and it gets confusing 🌐.

💡👑 I'm not sure if they're going for a super realistic take on Kate Chase or an epic drama queen moment 🤷‍♀️... The script feels like it's all over the place, but at the same time, the chemistry between Wallis Currie-Wood and Tom Victor is giving me LIFE 💕! Darrell Brockis as Salmon P. Chase is giving that gravitas, tho 👏... But honestly, can't they just stick to a clear timeline of events? 🤯 I'm still trying to piece together what's fact and fiction 🧐

I just saw this new play on the Queen, you know back when my grandparents told me stories about America's history... and I gotta say it feels kinda like that old school drama from when I was watching reruns of 'Mad Men' 😒. They're trying to tell Kate Chase's story but it's all over the place like a mixtape from the 90s 🎶. The acting is solid, no doubt about it, but it feels like they're getting lost in the details, you know? Like when I was reading this one book series as a kid and it just got so confusing trying to keep track of all the characters... anyway, I'm hoping they find that balance between making something new and staying true to what really happened. The chemistry between Kate and John Hay is actually pretty cool though 👯‍♀️!

I'm not entirely sure if this show is gonna be a huge hit or just another forgotten drama 🤔. I mean, the cast seems solid and all, but the script itself feels kinda meh. It's like they're trying to cram too many ideas into one play - Kate Chase's story is already so complex and fascinating, why do we need more Civil War drama thrown in? And don't even get me started on how they handled her relationship with John Hay... it felt a bit too convenient for my taste 😐.

😐 I'm not sure if this new play is gonna make it to the top, but I love how they're trying to tell a lesser-known story about female power 💪. The chemistry between Tom and Wallis is 🔥, no doubt about that! But, oh man, the script could've been tightened up some 📝. They're like, diving deep into the Civil War stuff and losing the tension in the dialogue 😴. And I'm all for exploring the complexities of Kate's relationships, but it feels like they're leaving us hanging with this blurred line between fact and fiction 🤔. Still, Darrell's accent is kinda cringeworthy sometimes 🙄, and those performances are enough to keep me interested 💭. Let's see if they can balance the drama with accuracy, or it'll be just a mess of its own making 🎬

I'm not sure if they'll be able to pull it off but that Brooklyn-based drama sounds kinda cool 🤔. I mean, exploring the untold story of Kate Chase is a great idea and Wallis Currie-Wood's performance as John Hay seems like a total highlight 🔥. But, on the other hand, a script that meanders and can't keep its threads together? That's just gonna be a mess 🤦‍♂️. And what's up with this whole historical drama thing... I'm all for it but don't they need to get some of those facts straight? ⏰ It's like trying to catch a fish outta water - you gotta navigate the past carefully so it doesn't, well, sink. 🌊
