Pete Alonso’s departure leaves another hole Mets need to address

The departure of Pete Alonso has left a gaping hole in the Mets' lineup, with the team's president of baseball operations David Stearns now facing an uphill task to address the void.

Alonso's sudden exit was perhaps not unexpected, given the fact that he nearly missed out on a seven-year contract worth $158 million last winter. Instead, he opted for a two-year deal worth $54 million with a built-in opt-out clause, which he exercised to leave the Mets.

The Orioles, one of the bidders for Kyle Schwarber's return to the Phillies, were reportedly close to offering Alonso an identical five-year contract worth $155 million, but ultimately decided against pursuing him further.

Alonso's departure will leave Juan Soto without a clear right-handed power bat in front of him, which could be a major concern. The Orioles' decision not to pursue Alonso means that they'll need to fill the gap with another player, leaving the Mets exposed at first base and potentially forcing them to look elsewhere for coverage.

The team's defensive woes will also continue to be an issue, as Stearns seeks to improve Alonso's range behind the plate. The trade of Brandon Nimmo to Texas in exchange for Marcus Semien brought some much-needed defensive help but still leaves the Mets with significant work to do.

With Devin Williams' three-year contract worth $51 million representing their only major league free agent signing this offseason, Stearns will need to make some shrewd moves to shore up the team's rotation and bullpen. Cody Bellinger is a potential option for first base and outfield coverage, while internal prospects like Mark Vientos and Ryan Clifford could also play a role.

As the Mets continue to navigate this uncertain period, one thing is clear: the departure of Pete Alonso has left a void that Stearns will need to fill quickly in order to ensure the team's competitiveness.

🤔 The sudden departure of Pete Alonso is a significant blow to the Mets' lineup and raises concerns about their overall team strategy 📉. With Alonso's exit, it seems David Stearns is now faced with an uphill task to address the void left by his absence ⛰️. I think the Orioles making a last-minute decision not to pursue Alonso was a smart move in hindsight, as it could have tied him down for too long 💪.

The Mets' defensive woes are still a major issue and need to be addressed ASAP 🚨. With Devin Williams being their only major league free agent signing this offseason, Stearns will have to make some clever moves to shore up the rotation and bullpen 🔄. Cody Bellinger could be a solid option for first base and outfield coverage, but internal prospects like Mark Vientos and Ryan Clifford might also come into play ⚾️.

The Mets' competitive edge is now hanging in the balance, and it's crucial that Stearns acts swiftly to fill the void left by Alonso 💨.

Man I'm actually kinda worried about what's gonna happen next with the Mets 🤔...I mean, Pete Alonso was like their entire power game and now he's gone 💥 It's not just about finding a replacement for him, but also figuring out how to shore up the defense, especially behind the plate 🤦‍♂️ They did make that trade for Marcus Semien, but I'm not sure if it'll be enough...and now they're gonna have to go after someone like Cody Bellinger or try to develop some of their own prospects...it's gonna be an interesting season, that's for sure 😬

🤣 Can you believe Pete Alonso just batted away his best offer like it was a free agent signing in Madden 🎮? I mean, 158 million dollars and he's all "no thanks, I'm good" 😂. Now the Mets are stuck with a gaping hole in their lineup and David Stearns is like "hold my beer" 👀. On the bright side, Cody Bellinger might be the answer to our prayers... or we'll just have another player who can't catch anything behind the plate 🤦‍♂️. The trade of Marcus Semien was a good start, but that's just like putting a Band-Aid on a bullet wound 💉. Mark my words, the Mets' rotation and bullpen are gonna be a hot mess 🔥

omg did u see what happened w/ pete alonso?? 🤯 i always suspected something fishy was goin on w/ him lol now its clear he was never meant 2 stay w/ the mets whole time think about it, he missed out on that huge contract last winter & now hes makin all this $$ in a much smaller deal 😏 meanwhile david stearns is stuck dealin w/ a gaping hole in the lineup & still gotta find ways 2 improve their defense 🤦‍♂️ u think the orioles did him dirty by not offerin him that contract? 🤑 maybe theres more 2 this story than meets the eye...

🤔 so i think pete alonso leaving the mets is a big deal... idk if david stearns can find someone with similar power & bat speed like him 🚀 tho the orioles passing on that offer was a major bummer for them now they gotta scramble to fill the gap 👀 and i feel bad for juan soto, who's stuck without a clear righty power bat in front of him 😔

🤔 The way Alonso just ghosted the Mets for another contender is so shady 💸 I mean, what really happened behind closed doors? Was it all about the money or was there something more at play? 🤑 Either way, Stearns needs to make some smart moves ASAP to fill that gap. This isn't gonna be easy, though... ⚾

I'm kinda worried about the Mets' lineup now 🤔. Losing Alonso was a big blow, especially with Soto relying on him for power. The Orioles could've easily filled that gap, but they decided against it... I guess you gotta wonder what could've been 😐.

The team's defense is still a mess 🚮, and Stearns is gonna have to make some smart trades or signups to fix it up. Maybe Cody Bellinger can help out at first base or outfield? Or maybe Mark Vientos and Ryan Clifford will step up from the minors? Fingers crossed! 🤞 The rotation and bullpen still need a boost too... it's gonna be an interesting offseason for the Mets ⚾

Ugh, I'm dead 🤦‍♂️! The Mets' offseason just got a whole lot more interesting... and complicated 😬. David Stearns needs to pull off some serious magic tricks to address that gaping hole left by Pete Alonso 👀. I mean, who's gonna be Juan Soto's power bat? 🤔 Cody Bellinger could be the answer, but he's still no Alonso 💪. And what about first base and outfield coverage? Mark Vientos is a promising prospect, but can he step up right now? ⚾️ The Mets' rotation and bullpen need some serious revamp too... 51 million for Devin Williams just won't cut it 💸

idk wut the Mets r doin 1st lol 😂 they just lost pete alonso and now dey gotta find another power hitter. its like, david stearns is tryna fix everythin at once 🤯 but dey traded away bradley nimmo 2 texas and stil got defensive issues... maybe cody bellinger wud b good 4 dem? 🤷‍♂️ i dunno, gotta keep watchin 2 see whut happens nxt 💥

🤔 I feel bad for David Stearns, he's gotta deal with this massive hole in their lineup and find a way to fill it ASAP 💸 The Mets' rotation and bullpen are gonna be a challenge too 🤯 they need someone like Cody Bellinger or those internal prospects to step up 👍

omg u guys, alonso's departure is def a huge blow 2 the mets 😱 i was so hyped 2 see him crush it @ first base & behind the plate but i guess not this time... david stearns gotta step up his game 4 real 👀 now they gotta find some other dude 2 fill that gap @ 1b & c & that's a tough one cuz they need someone w/ some power & defense. can't wait 2 see what they do next 🤔

Ugh, this offseason just got so much more interesting 😩🤔 I mean, I'm all for Pete Alonso getting some space and his contract being reworked, but now it feels like David Stearns is stuck with a big hole at first base 🤷‍♂️. I feel bad for Soto, that guy was just starting to find his groove. The Orioles' decision to go with another player instead of Alonso's deal is so weird, I mean what changed? 😒

And don't even get me started on the defense, it's like they're playing a never-ending game of catch-up 🤦‍♂️. Brandon Nimmo was a solid trade for Marcus Semien, but now it feels like Stearns has to find some magic in the rotation and bullpen 🧙‍♂️. I'm keeping an eye on Cody Bellinger, he could be the answer to many prayers 😃.

I just wish Stearns would take his time, assess the situation, and make some smart moves instead of feeling rushed 💨. This offseason is gonna be a wild ride, that's for sure 🎢.

the mets are in a tough spot without pete alonso 🤔... david stearns gotta make some smart moves to fill that gap, maybe look into some free agency options like cody bellinger or sign some of their internal prospects 📈

anyway, stearns' task just got harder with the o's not pursuing Alonso 🙅‍♂️... now they've gotta find another power bat for juan soto, which is a big ask ⚾️. and it's not just about offense, their defense is still a mess 🤦‍♂️

i'm curious to see what stearns comes up with next 💡... maybe some shrewd trades or signings that'll shore up the rotation and bullpen? 🔮 only time will tell!

I was just thinking about my grandma's old recipe for chocolate chip cookies 🍪 she used to make for me all the time... anyway, back to baseball... I wonder if the Mets could trade some of their minor league prospects for a closer? You know, someone who can set up Marcus Semien and Devin Williams for those big saves 🎯. And speaking of snacks, have you tried that new kettle corn flavor at the ballgame concession stand? It's pretty tasty!

man I'm still trying to wrap my head around Alonso leaving the Mets like what just happened?! 🤯 they're gonna have to scramble now to find someone to fill the gap at first base and behind the plate, it's not looking good for their defense. Stearns is gonna have to go all out to make some big trades or sign some solid free agents to get this team back on track. I'm loving the idea of Cody Bellinger being a potential option tho 🤔

I'm still trying to wrap my head around why the Orioles were like "meh" on offering Pete Alonso $155 million... 🤔 I mean, if they wanted him so bad, wouldn't they have pulled out all the stops? And what's with this new info about them not pursuing him further because of his opt-out clause? Wasn't that a selling point for Alonso in the first place? 🤑
