Rearming to reduce dependence on US should be Europe's top priority, says Danish prime minister – Europe live

Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has emphasized that Europe should prioritize arming itself to reduce its dependence on the US, warning that "Russia does not want peace with Europe" and urging the continent to "stick together." This comes as tensions between Europe and the US escalate over issues like Greenland.

Frederiksen made these comments during a speech at Sciences Po in Paris, where she also warned that Russia's intentions are "clearly not peaceful." She emphasized that Europe needs to be more independent in its defense policies, particularly when it comes to Nato, and expressed concerns about the US's ability to defend itself.

The Danish Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of pan-European capabilities and called for a new European Security Council to enhance political coordination on defense. Her remarks were seen as a challenge to Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte's recent comments that Europe cannot defend itself without the US.

EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas has also warned that Europe is in dire need of adapting to new realities, particularly with regards to Russia's aggressive behavior and shifting global dynamics. She emphasized the importance of raising defense spending and getting clarity on Europe's role in tomorrow's world.

The European Union has been grappling with its relationship with the US as tensions rise over various issues. The EU has called for a more independent approach to defense, but the pace of change is slow, and many countries are hesitant to take on more responsibility.

Greenland, which is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has been at the center of tensions between Europe and the US. The US had plans to establish a military base in Greenland, but Denmark rejected the proposal, citing concerns about national sovereignty.

As the situation continues to unfold, Frederiksen's comments are seen as a call to action for European leaders to prioritize their own defense and reduce their dependence on the US.

🤔 I think it's totally crazy that EU leaders are freaking out over Russia being "aggressive" 🚫 and suddenly need to arm themselves like a bunch of teenagers with their first guns 🎯. Like, what happened to diplomacy? 😕 We're just going to build more bombs and hope for the best? That's not how you solve conflicts, dude! 🤷‍♂️ And another thing, why do we need a new European Security Council? Can't we just stick with NATO like everyone else? 🤦‍♀️

🤔 gotta feel like denmark's trying to take control of its own destiny here... Mette Frederiksen is right in saying that europe needs to be more independent, but it's not that easy to just 'stick together' when you're dealing with a superpower like the us 🤑 what's the point of having a stronger eu if you can't even make your own defense decisions? 💪

i'm also low-key concerned about russia's intentions... they don't seem like the type to be all about peace and love 😒 but at the same time, i get why europe needs to be more proactive on its own defense. maybe it's time for a new eu security council to sort things out? 🤝

anyway, this whole greland thing is just another example of how complicated international relations can get 🌎 it's not gonna be easy for europe (or denmark) to navigate these waters, but i guess that's why they need more pan-eu cooperation 💡

EU NEEDS TO GET ITS ACT TOGETHER HERE! FREDERIKSEN IS RIGHT ON THE MONEY WITH HER COMMENTS ABOUT EU BEING TOO DEPENDENT ON THE US FOR DEFENSE. WE CAN'T JUST RELY ON OTHER COUNTRIES TO PROTECT US, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO GLOBAL ISSUES LIKE RUSSIA AND GREENLAND. IT'S TIME FOR EU TO TAKE CONTROL OF ITS OWN DEFENSE POLICIES AND SET UP A NEW SECURITY COUNCIL TO COORDINATE OUR RESPONSES.

I'M SICK OF SEEING EU LEADERS TALKING ABOUT INDEPENDENCE BUT NOT ACTUALLY DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. WE NEED TO STOP WAITING FOR THE US TO RESCUE US AND START TAKING CARE OF OUR OWN BUSINESS. IT'S TIME FOR EU TO SHOW WE CAN STAND ON OUR OWN TWO FEET, EVEN IF IT MEANS MAKING SOME CHALLENGING DECISIONS.

I'm low-key glad Mette Frederiksen is speaking up about this stuff 🤔. I think it's time we took responsibility for our own defense in Europe, you know? We can't keep relying on the US all the time. It's like, we're a big continent with a lot of resources and capabilities - we should be investing more in our own security rather than just waiting for someone else to save us 😊.

I'm also kinda excited about the idea of a pan-European Security Council 💡. That would bring all the EU countries together on defense and give us a stronger voice globally. It's time we stopped playing second fiddle to Nato and started taking charge of our own destiny 💪.

But at the same time, I don't think this is a zero-sum game where Europe has to choose between being part of Nato or not 🤷‍♀️. We can work with the US on some issues while still maintaining our independence. It's all about finding that balance and taking care of ourselves in a rapidly changing world 🔒.

🤔 I'm all for Europe being more independent when it comes to defense, but do we really want to create our own military superpower overnight? 🤑 It's not like Russia is going anywhere anytime soon, right? 💪 But seriously, what if this whole "stick together" thing actually works? 🤝 We've seen how coordinated the EU has been on issues like migration and climate change, so why can't we get our act together on defense? 🔒 Denmark's got a point about needing to be more proactive, but is it time to take a leap of faith and invest in some serious defense tech? 💸 It's all very interesting, but I think we need to see how this plays out before we start building up our own military might. 🤔

US is getting cold feet and Europe needs to step up its game 🚀💪. Russia doesn't care about peace, so let's just assume they're outta here 👋. We should be preparing our own defense system not relying on someone else like a backup plan ⚠️.

Ugh 🤯 this is getting serious, we're talking full-blown Cold War vibes 😬! I mean, Mette Frederiksen's right though, Russia doesn't want peace with Europe and it's time for us to take matters into our own hands 💪. We need a stronger European defense system, period 💥. I'm not saying we should completely cut ties with the US, but let's be real, they're not exactly our biggest allies at the moment 🤷‍♀️. It's time for us to step up and take control of our own destiny 🔒. And yeah, a new European Security Council sounds like a great idea 👍, we need more coordination and cooperation on defense issues. This is getting too intense, fingers crossed we don't have to go down this road 💥

🤔 You know what's weird? I was just browsing through an old photo album of my grandma and I found this super old family recipe book 📚 that has these crazy detailed recipes for traditional Danish dishes like flæskesteg 🍖️ and rugbrød 🍞. I mean, who knew we were such masters of the pastry arts? Anyway, it got me thinking about how food is so connected to culture and identity... have you ever tried making traditional Danish treats from scratch? It's a real game-changer 😂.

🤔 I think Europe should really step up its game when it comes to defense. We can't just rely on the US all the time 🙅‍♂️. It's like, we're a whole continent with a huge economy and population - we should be able to protect ourselves 💪. I mean, Russia's not going to magically change its ways just because Europe decides to get more independent 🤷‍♀️. We need to invest in our own defense capabilities and work together as a team 🤝. It's all about being prepared for the future 💻. Denmark is trying to lead the way here, and I think they're onto something 👏. Maybe it's time for us Europeans to take charge of our own security instead of relying on our friends across the pond 🌐.

Man, this is crazy! 🤯 I think Europe needs to step up its game, you know? They can't keep relying on the US for everything. Russia is just testing them and they're not taking it seriously enough... 🙄 It's like they're all waiting for someone else to take action while their own backside is exposed.

And yeah, Nato is a joke! 😂 Mark Rutte thinks Europe can just sit there while the US does all the heavy lifting? Please. They need to be more independent and work together as a team... not just follow the US down the path of destruction.

I love that Frederiksen is calling for a new European Security Council, though. That's like, the ultimate power move! 💪 They need to start making their own decisions and taking care of themselves. And Kallas is right too - they can't just sit around waiting for something to happen... they have to take charge and adapt.

This whole Greenland thing is just a distraction, you know? 🙃 The US was trying to push their agenda through, but Denmark shut that down quick. It's all about playing politics and who's got the upper hand right now. But Europe needs to stop worrying about what others think and start taking control of their own destiny...
