Reeves to back DLR extension in major boost for deprived London district

UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves is set to announce significant funding for the extension of the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) to Thamesmead in southeast London. The long-awaited project has been hailed as a major boost for one of the city's poorest and most isolated districts, where residents have been without fixed public transport links for years.

The DLR extension is expected to cost around ยฃ1.7 billion and will connect Gallions Reach near London City Airport with Thamesmead and Beckton. The new line could significantly cut journey times into central London, reducing travel time from 35-40 minutes to just that. The project will also unlock land for the development of thousands of new homes and up to 10,000 new jobs, according to Transport for London (TfL).

The area has long been characterized by poverty and lack of investment. Historically, Thamesmead's status as one of London's most deprived areas is largely due to its remote location, far from road crossings and the nearest public transport links. The extension of the DLR could be a game-changer for residents, providing them with better access to jobs, services, and amenities.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been a vocal supporter of the project, saying it will "transform travel in a historically under-served part of the capital" and boost the economy both locally and nationally. With backing from Reeves and TfL, the extension is now on track to become a reality.

just hope they get it done soon, been hearing about this for years and people around there are struggling so much ๐Ÿคž. think it's a great idea to connect Gallions Reach to Thamesmead though, it'll be a big help for the community. ยฃ1.7 billion is a lot of dosh but if it means better transport links and new homes/jobs then it's worth it. been reading some comments online saying the area needs more investment overall and i think that's true, poverty and lack of opportunity can be really tough to get out of ๐Ÿ’ธ

Ugh, it's about time they finally did something for Thamesmead ๐Ÿ™„. I mean, ยฃ1.7 billion is a lot of money, but let's be real, it's still just a drop in the ocean compared to how much this area needs. And we all know how these projects always get delayed or go over budget... ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ Still, at least it'll give those residents some decent transport links for once. And the jobs and homes are just icing on the cake, but I'm not holding my breath ๐Ÿ˜’. I mean, what's to stop this from being another half-baked plan that just benefits the fat cats and corporations? At least the Mayor is trying to spin it as a "game-changer", but we know how those spin doctors work... ๐Ÿคฅ

๐Ÿš‚๐Ÿ’จ I'm so down for this DLR extension! It's about time Thamesmead got some love and better transport links ๐Ÿ™Œ. I mean, who wants to spend 35-40 minutes stuck in traffic when you can be at work or with family? ๐Ÿ˜ฉ The fact that it'll create thousands of new homes and jobs is a huge win for the community too ๐Ÿ‘. It's not just about getting from point A to B, it's about connecting people and making their lives easier ๐ŸŒˆ. I'm all for investing in areas like this and giving them a chance to thrive ๐Ÿคž. Bring on that ยฃ1.7 billion and let's get this project moving! ๐Ÿ’ช

This DLR extension is gonna be a lifesaver for Thamesmead residents! They've been stuck in the dark ages without decent transport links for far too long . ยฃ1.7 billion might seem like a lot, but think about all the people who'll get their lives improved - reduced commute times are huge, and new homes & jobs will bring some much-needed economic boost to the area

I'm loving Sadiq Khan's enthusiasm for this project, and now with Reeves on board too, it's getting real! The fact that it'll unlock land for thousands of new homes & 10k+ jobs is mind-blowing . Thamesmead's been neglected for way too long, but this could be the turning point they need. Fingers crossed it gets completed ASAP ๐Ÿš‚๐Ÿ’จ

oh man, ยฃ1.7 billion for Thamesmead is like a breath of fresh air ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ! finally, some major investment in an area that's been neglected for ages. I've got family down there and it's crazy how hard they have to work just to get around, so this DLR extension is gonna be a GAME CHANGER ๐Ÿ’ฅ. can't wait to see those new homes and jobs popping up, it's gonna bring some life to the area that's been dying for years ๐Ÿ˜Š. Sadiq Khan must be one smart mayor, I love how he's been pushing for this project ๐Ÿค

OMG u kno how long Thamesmead has been waitin 4 a decent transport link? ๐Ÿš‚๐Ÿ’จ this DLR extn is gonna b a lifesaver 4 those livin in that area its like, who needs 2 travel 35-40 mins 2 central london lol its like, rite on ๐Ÿคฃ and now they're talkin bout unlockin land 4 new homes n jobs thats gonna boost the economy n everythin. u go, Reeves 4 gettin this done! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ

Oh man I'm literally so hyped about this news!!! ยฃ1.7 billion for a rail line that's gonna change lives in Thamesmead?! It's like, we're talking poverty rates that are just through the roof, people struggling to get anywhere without a car or public transport and now suddenly they've got a DLR extension that's gonna cut their travel time by HALF. I mean can you even imagine how much of a difference that's gonna make? For people who can't afford to own a car it's like, they're literally stuck in a cycle of poverty because they can't get out. But with this line they'll be able to get to work, get to school, get to the shops... it's like, they've got a lifeline. And it's not just about them, it's about the whole community, all those new homes and jobs that are gonna pop up. It's like, a whole new world is opening up for people who were previously stuck in the dark ages. I'm literally so excited to see this project come together and know that it's gonna make a real difference in lives ๐Ÿ’ฅ

OMG u guyz i just read about this huge funding announcement for the DLR expansion ๐Ÿš‚๐Ÿ’ธ its gonna bring life to Thamesmead like seriously they've been lacking transport links 4eva & now its finally happening! ยฃ1.7b is crazy 2 think bout but if it means better jobs & homes 4 thousands of ppl then its def a good investment ๐Ÿ™Œ

i can imagine how hard it must be 2 live in an area w/ no decent public transport like that... anyway cant wait 2 see what all this has in store 4 Thamesmead ๐Ÿคž link: https://www.theguardian.com/business/2025/mar/01/london-transport-ยฃ1.7bn-dlr-extension

Ugh, I'm so glad they're finally doing something about Thamesmead ๐Ÿ™Œ. I mean, it's been like, what, 20 years since people have had decent public transport around there? It's bloody ridiculous that you can't even get to the City without having to take a bus or something. But this DLR extension is gonna be a lifesaver for those poor souls living in the area ๐Ÿค . I mean, ยฃ1.7 billion might seem like a lot, but think about all the jobs and homes it's gonna create โ€“ that's some serious investment right there ๐Ÿ’ธ. And let's not forget how much easier travel times are gonna be once this is done โ€“ 35-40 minutes to central London? That's basically walking distance ๐Ÿ˜‚. Back in my day... well, I wasn't actually born yet, but you get the idea ๐Ÿ™ƒ.

I'm stoked to hear about this massive ยฃ1.7 billion investment for the DLR extension! ๐Ÿ™Œ It's long overdue that Thamesmead gets some decent public transport links - I mean, 35-40 minutes to central London is still ages for someone who needs to get to work or visit their family every day. The thought of new homes and jobs popping up in the area is huge too... it could really turn things around for those struggling with poverty.

But we gotta keep an eye on how this money's being spent, you know? ยฃ1.7 billion is a LOT of cash and I wanna make sure it's not just a case of throwing good money after bad. Are they planning to give back to the community in a meaningful way? How will they ensure that new developments actually benefit the locals and not just wealthy investors? It's all about finding that sweet spot where progress happens without leaving people behind...

I don't usually comment but... I think this is a huge deal for Thamesmead! ยฃ1.7 billion is a lot of money, and it's about time they got some decent transport links up there ๐Ÿš‚. I mean, can you imagine not being able to get to work or the shops without having to take like 2 buses or something? It's crazy how isolated that area must feel.

I'm all for them building more homes and jobs too, it'll definitely help with the poverty thing. But at the same time, I don't want them to just slap up some bland apartments and call it a day ๐Ÿ˜. Can they make sure they include some green spaces and community facilities or something? That would be awesome.

Also, I'm not exactly sure how this will affect the traffic in central London, but hopefully, it won't make things worse ๐Ÿค”. Fingers crossed that it all comes together smoothly!

I'm so stoked about this news! ๐Ÿš‚๐Ÿ’จ They're finally going to fix those transportation issues in Thamesmead! It's been ages since people have had decent access to public transport, and it's only made things worse for the community.

Imagine being able to travel from Gallions Reach to central London in under 40 minutes โฑ๏ธ - that's crazy fast! And with thousands of new homes and up to 10k new jobs coming with this project, people are going to have so many more opportunities. ๐ŸŒˆ It's all about connecting the dots and making it easier for people to get around.

I'm also loving how Mayor Sadiq Khan is on board with this project ๐Ÿ™Œ. He's got a clear vision for London, and this extension of the DLR is going to be a huge part of that. Here's a rough diagram of what it'll look like: ```
_ _
| | |
| | DLR |
| |_______|

| Thamesmead |
|_______|
```
The DLR will connect Gallions Reach, London City Airport, and Thamesmead. It's going to be a real game-changer for this community! ๐ŸŽฎ
omg u gotta be kiddin me! ยฃ1.7 BILLION 4 just a tiny bit of transportation lol its about time tho! Thamesmead has been stuck in a rut 4 yrs & it's gonna be AMAZING 2 see ppl gettin better access 2 jobs, services n amenities! ๐Ÿš‚๐Ÿ’ผ๐Ÿ  cant wait 2 c this project come 2 life n watch ths area thrive!
the thing that gets me about this DLR extension is how long it's taken to get here ๐Ÿคฏ I mean, Thamesmead's been missing out on some major convenience for ages. 35-40 minutes just to get into central London? that's like, forever ๐Ÿ˜‚ and now we're finally gonna see some real change with this ยฃ1.7 billion boost. it's all about the people who've been living there, struggling to make ends meet. gotta feel good knowing they'll have better access to jobs and services. and let's not forget those new homes and 10k+ jobs - that's some serious investment in the community ๐Ÿค‘
