Sirāt review – rave in the desert leads to exasperating quest in the sands of Morocco

The Desert Rave: A Mind-Bogglingly Senseless Quest

Sirāt, the Arabic term for the narrow path to paradise, could aptly describe the film's meandering journey through the Moroccan desert. Director Oliver Laxe's latest opus is a jarring experience that defies coherent storytelling and instead indulges in a psychedelic spectacle.

The movie begins with a rousing rave in the desert, an unbridled celebration of life, music, and abandon. It's a mesmerizing setpiece that showcases the beauty of Morocco's vast expanse. However, as two outsiders – middle-aged Luis and his young son Esteban – stumble upon this gathering, all sense of purpose and direction begins to unravel.

Luis's desperation is palpable as he searches for his missing daughter Mar, who vanished months earlier. The crowd at the rave seems both fascinated and repelled by these interlopers, their reactions ranging from hostility to sympathetic concern. But instead of delving deeper into the mystery, the narrative careens off the rails, leading to a series of increasingly absurd events.

The film's climax – a moment of tragic horror that leaves much unexplained – feels more like a Pythonesque farce than an emotionally resonant experience. As the story meanders further into the desert, the characters' actions become detached from any semblance of reality or purpose.

Veteran actor Sergi López brings some gravitas to his role as Luis, but even he can't inject enough sense into this mess. The supporting cast fares little better, with their character arcs reducing to shallow tropes and convenient plot devices.

What was once an alluring premise is slowly drained of its emotional impact, leaving the viewer feeling disoriented and disconnected. Sirāt is a mirage of unearned emotion, a pointless exercise in style over substance that forgets the power of storytelling altogether. With its fractured narrative and self-indulgent excesses, this film's only destination seems to be the desert itself – a desolate wasteland devoid of meaning or purpose.

I'm literally torn about this movie 🤯. On one hand, I love how it captures the essence of that Moroccan rave and the freedom that comes with letting go. It's like they took all those crazy festival vibes and put them on screen in a way that's super visually striking 🔥. But then, I start thinking about the plot and how it just kinda... stops making sense 🤔. Like, what's up with Luis's quest for his daughter? Is it really worth sacrificing everything else for? And don't even get me started on that climax - is it supposed to be some kind of commentary on life and death or just a weird joke? 🤷‍♂️ I mean, I loved Sergi López in this, he brought such depth to the character. But at the same time, I think the whole thing got lost in translation (no pun intended) and became more about style than substance 💔.

omg, i just watched sirāt with my friends and we were all so confused 😂🤯 the rave scene was hella lit tho! but for real though, the rest of the movie was like... what's going on? 🤔 luis's daughter mar should've been a bigger part of the story. Sergi López tried his best, i guess, but even he couldn't save this film from itself 🙅‍♂️ and omg, that ending though 😱 it felt so out of place! anyway, i'm still trying to wrap my head around what just happened 🤯👀

omg i just saw this movie 🤯🎥 it was like watching a wild psychedelic dream but not in a good way 😴👀 the whole thing felt so meandering and pointless 🚫💨 like what even is the point of all these random events unfolding 🤔♂️? and don't even get me started on the characters 🤷‍♀️ they were so one-dimensional and forgettable 😴 i mean i was rooting for luis to find his daughter but it just didn't feel real 💔👎

I just watched the most mind-blowing Desert Rave movie and I'm still trying to pick my brain up from the floor 🤯💥 The music was insane, but that's about where it ended for me... I mean, what's with all the random characters and plot twists? It's like they took a bunch of cool ideas and just threw them together without thinking about how they'd fit together. And don't even get me started on the ending - I'm still trying to figure out what was going on! 🤔😩 I love a good rave as much as the next person, but sometimes less is more, right? A clean narrative isn't too much to ask for in a film... 😴

I just watched this movie Sirāt and I gotta say it was like someone hit the fast forward button on my emotions 🤯. The rave scene in the beginning is straight fire 🔥 but after that, it's like they took all the plot threads and threw them into a blender with no filter 💥. The acting is good, Sergi López is amazing as always 👏 but even he can't save this mess from itself. I get what the director was trying to do - create an immersive experience 🌄 - but sometimes less is more, you know? It feels like they were so busy making it look cool and psychedelic that they forgot about actually telling a story 🤪. Overall, I'd say it's just a bunch of style over substance, and not in a good way 😐

I just watched Sirāt and I'm still trying to figure out what the director was going for 🤔. The rave scenes were definitely visually stunning but that's about where it ends in terms of coherence. I mean, what's with the random appearances of characters and plot twists? It felt like they were throwing everything at the wall and hoping some of it would stick. Sergi López is a talented actor, but he couldn't save this film from its own meandering mess. And don't even get me started on the ending... it was just so abrupt and unearned. I need to see what others are saying about it before I make up my mind, though 📺.

I gotta disagree with all this negativity about the movie 🙅‍♂️. I mean, come on, who doesn't love a good rave in the desert? It sounds like the ultimate wild party and I'm totally here for it 🎉! The fact that it's "sensless" is just code for "it's too trippy" and honestly, I think that's what makes it so interesting 😴. And don't even get me started on the characters - Luis's desperation might be palpable to some, but to others, like me, it's relatable and humanizing 🤝. The film's excesses are actually its strengths, in my opinion 💥. It's a celebration of life, music, and freedom, and who doesn't need that more in this crazy world? 🌟

omg can we pls just agree that oliver laxe is trying way too hard w/ this movie? 🤯 it feels like he's more concerned w/ getting the aesthetics right than actually telling a coherent story. and btw, a desert rave sounds soooo fun in theory but in reality it just becomes an excuse for the characters to wander around aimlessly while we're all just sitting there thinking "is this it?". 🙄

OMG u guys, i gotta say i watched siraat n it was like... so weird 😂🔥 at 1st but then i started thinkin about it nd i realized its kinda like life itself - we're all just tryna find our way thru the desert of existence & stuff 🌄💫. it doesn't matter if the story makes sense or not, cuz what matters is the vibe nd the emotions u get from watchin it 💖🎥. its like oliver laxe is sayin life's messy nd we should just roll with it 🤪. nd Sergi lopez he's like the ultimate everyman, so relatable 😂. anywaa i'm still tryna figger out what happened at the end tho 🤔👀

this movie is like watching paint dry lol what was the point of it all? i mean i love oliver laxe's previous work but this one feels like he got lost in the dunes 🌀💨 and yeah sergei lopez is the only one who tries to bring some depth to the story but even his character feels like a prop at times 🤦‍♂️ anyone else feel like they were left high and dry after watching this? 😐

idk what the point of this movie is lol it starts off all hype but then just descends into chaos like anyone even cares about luis's daughter anymore? and Sergi López can't even save it from its own plot holes 🙄 the whole desert rave thing was cool at first but now it just feels like a bunch of people being weird for no reason, meanwhile mar's disappearance is basically an afterthought 🤷‍♂️

omg u guys 🤯😂 this movie sounds like a wild ride but i gotta agree with u it's all over the place 🌄💥 one sec 👀👉 and then suddenly it's just like what r they even doing out here 🤷‍♂️🔮 and that ending tho 😱😨 like wut happened? 🤯 didn't see it coming at all 😅 anyway, i think the only good thing about this flick is that morocco looks straight fire 🔥🌅 gotta give oliver laxe some credit for that part 👍

omg u guys i just watched sirat and i'm like totally baffled lol the rave scene was so fire but then it just went downhill from there idk wut happnd 2 the story lol louis's desperation felt real but then it just got weird n weird n weird like what even is goin on here?? Sergi López's acting did save the movie a lil bit but idk i just didnt connect w/ the rest of the cast lmao the ending was like... what r u even tryna say?? its like a joke lol dont get me wrong i love morocco n all but dis film had 2 many missteps it felt like they were tryin 2 be artsy or somethin instead of just tellin a good story 🤯🎥

🤔 I gotta say, I went into this movie expecting it to be all about that crazy rave scene in the desert 🌵💃... and yeah, it did NOT disappoint! 😂 The energy was infectious, and Morocco's landscape is seriously breathtaking 🌅 But, where was the story? Like, what happened with Luis' daughter? I felt like I was stuck in a super weird dream trying to follow what was going on 🤯. And don't even get me started on the ending... it was just so... confusing 😕. Can we just say it had some cool visuals and call it a day?

I JUST WATCHED THIS MOVIE AND I'M STILL TRYING TO MAKE SENSE OF IT 🤯🌄! THE IDEA OF A RAVE IN THE DESERT WAS PRETTY COOL, BUT THEN IT JUST GOT LOST IN ALL THESE WILD SCENES THAT DIDN'T REALLY ADD UP. I MEAN, I GET IT, THE DIRECTOR WANTED TO CREATE A SENSE OF DISORIENTATION AND ALL THAT, BUT COME ON, SOME STUFF'S JUST GOTTA BE TIDY, RIGHT? 😅 THE ACTING WAS OKAY, BUT SERGI LÓPEZ'S CHARACTER FEEL LIKE HE'S JUST GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS. OVERALL, IT FELT LIKE A REALLY MEANINGLESS WALK IN THE DESERT WITHOUT ANY REAL PURPOSE OR RESOLVE...

🤯 I'm so over this movie! The whole premise was like trying to follow a mirage - it looks alluring but turns out to be just sand and dust. And don't even get me started on how poorly they executed the plot twists 🙅‍♂️. It's like they took every crazy rave experience, threw in some existential crisis nonsense, and called it a film 🎥. I was actually rooting for Luis to find his daughter, but nope, the movie had other plans 🤷‍♂️. And Sergi López is talented enough to carry an entire movie by himself, but even he's not enough to save this mess 🙈.
