Sleaford Mods: The Demise of Planet X review – vulnerability and versatility widen potty-mouthed appeal

Sleaford Mods' latest offering, The Demise of Planet X, solidifies their status as the purveyors of scathing social commentary. Jason Williamson's characteristic vitriol is on full display, yet the duo has made a welcome shift towards vulnerability and versatility.

Williamson's unflinching assessment of modern life is still evident, from the bleakness of economic collapse to the absurdity of far-right ideologies. However, he now brings a newfound openness, as seen in "Gina Was," a harrowing account of a childhood trauma that humanizes him in a way that feels both authentic and deeply unsettling.

The sonic landscape has also evolved significantly, with producer Andrew Fearn pushing the boundaries of his electro-punk sound. He's incorporated classical strings on tracks like Double Diamond and collaborated with an expanded range of artists, resulting in a more nuanced and diverse output.

One of the most striking aspects of The Demise of Planet X is its ability to balance humor and pathos. Tracks like "The Good Life" showcase Williamson's partner-in-crime, Game of Thrones actress Gwendoline Christie, delivering a furious rap that complements his gruff vocals perfectly. Meanwhile, the unexpected highlight, "No Touch," finds Williamson paired with former Life Without Buildings singer Sue Tompkins in a comically dysfunctional duet that humorously peels away at his grumpy facade.

This newfound vulnerability and willingness to experiment have indeed broadened Sleaford Mods' appeal, cementing their position as one of the most innovative and uncompromising voices in contemporary music.

I mean, can you believe this? Sleaford Mods are like the comedy club of music - they're so good at poking fun at ourselves that we forget to laugh at them being weird too 😂! But seriously, Jason Williamson's got some serious skills, and I love how he's finally letting his guard down. It's like he's saying "hey, I'm a grumpy dude, but I've also been through some stuff"... now if only my Spotify playlists could get that emotional 🤣🎶

OMG u guys gotta listen to this new album from Sleaford Mods!!! its like they're speaking truth to power or something 🤯 Jason's still got that fire in his belly but now he's also being super vulnerable & honest about his own demons 💔 I love how Andrew Fearn is pushing the sound too, it's like a whole new level of depth to their electro-punk vibes 💥 And can we talk about Gwendoline Christie rapping on "The Good Life"? girl slays 🤩 this album is proof that Sleaford Mods are still the real deal 👑

I'm loving how Sleaford Mods are pushing boundaries with this new album! They've always been about speaking truth to power, but now Jason's got a new level of emotional depth that just makes you feel like you're getting real talk from your mate 😊🎸. It's no surprise they've attracted some new fans - the genre-bending sound is infectious and Williamson's storytelling is next-level. And let's be real, who doesn't love watching Gwendoline Christie go off on a rap? 😉 The way they balance humor with pathos is like poetry in motion... it's like they're trying to tell you this crazy story about modern life and we're all just along for the ride 🤯🎶.

Sleaford Mods are killing it with this new album 🤯😂🎶 - Jason's being super real about trauma & life struggles but also showing us his vulnerable side 👊💔

🤯 I'm low-key obsessed with The Demise of Planet X! Jason Williamson's been tackling some heavy stuff, but this album takes it to a whole new level. I mean, who knew he had all that emotional baggage under his gruff exterior? 😂 Gwendoline Christie slaying on "The Good Life" tho... and can we talk about the unexpected Sue Tompkins collab in "No Touch"? The way they bounce off each other is pure magic! 💥 The production's also been lifted, Andrew Fearn's brought so much depth to his sound. Sleaford Mods are like the musical embodiment of a dysfunctional family you secretly love - all the craziness and weirdness, but somehow it works 🤪

im not gonna lie, i was a bit skeptical about sealford mods going in this new direction...i mean, jason williamson's been known for his sharp tongue and scathing critiques of society, so it felt like he might lose that edge with all the vulnerability and experimentation. but honestly, i'm really glad they took the risk - "gina was" is a powerful song that shows a more human side to him and adds some much-needed depth to their music 🤯. and the collaborations on this album are straight fire - game of thrones gwendoline christie bringing her A-game to "the good life" is pure magic 🔥.

omg u gotta check out sleeford mods new album the demise of planet x!!! 🤯 jason williamson's songwritin is SO on point - he's not afraid to tackle dark stuff like econmic collaspse & far right ideologies, but now hes gettin all vulnerable & experimental 🎶 the electro-punk sound is fire, esp with them clssical strings 🎻& sue tompkins rapping on "no touch" tho lol what a weird combo 😂 but for real tho, this album is proof that sleeford mods are still killin it w/ their social commentary & humor

😂 I was just watching this crazy YouTube video of a cat "playing" the piano... like it's actually trying to compose Beethoven sonatas 🤣 but seriously, have you seen those cats playing instruments? It's like they're possessed or something 😹. Anyway, Sleaford Mods are awesome, I've been listening to their new album nonstop and I love how they're not afraid to get weird with their sound. Like, who else can make a song about economic collapse funny and catchy at the same time? 🤷‍♂️

🤯 I'm loving how Sleaford Mods has evolved with The Demise of Planet X! Jason Williamson's not afraid to get real about life, but now he's also showing us his softer side 🌈. That "Gina Was" track is giving me all the feels - it's like we're getting a glimpse into his actual human (vs just his alter ego) 💕. And can we talk about how much I adore Gwendoline Christie on their tracks?! She totally brings that fire 🔥! The humor and pathos balance is spot on, and I'm so here for the silly duet with Sue Tompkins 😂🎶 - it's like they're trolling the whole "grumpy Jason" thing 🤣. Overall, Sleaford Mods just got even more interesting & innovative - can't wait to see what they do next! 💥

I gotta say, I'm loving the new direction Sleaford Mods is taking 🤩. They've always been sharp with their social commentary, but now Jason's being way more open about his own stuff, you know? Like that track "Gina Was" - it's crazy to see him share this vulnerable side 😱. And Andrew Fearn's sound design is on point too! The way he blends electro-punk and classical stuff is totally fresh 🎵.

But what really gets me is how they balance humor with pathos, it's like they're not taking themselves too seriously anymore 💁‍♂️. I mean, "The Good Life" with Gwendoline Christie rapping? Iconic 😂. And that "No Touch" duet with Sue Tompkins? Genius! It's like Jason's grumpy persona is being totally poked fun at 🤣.

I'm stoked to see Sleaford Mods pushing the boundaries and experimenting with their sound. They're not afraid to take risks, and it's paid off big time 🔥.
