Sleeping Beauty review – York's pun-packed crowd-pleaser has a double helping of fairy dust

York Theatre Royal's "Sleeping Beauty" review finds that this year's festive panto has landed with a particularly brilliant gag, leaving cast and audience gasping for breath between laughs. Paul Hendy's production feels solidly bedded in, relying on the familiar formula of crowd-pleasing set pieces, daft comedy routines, and pun-packed jokes to delight repeat audiences.

The show's star, Robin Simpson as Nurse Nellie, shines with an unpredictable twinkle in his eye, riffing on genuine slip-ups that land well. The supporting cast delivers strong performances, including Tommy Carmichael as Jangles and Jennie Dale and Jocasta Almgill in a delightful double act as the good and bad fairies.

However, the distinctive local flavour of pantomime is slightly lost this year, with only easy cracks at Hull and Nigel Farage feeling particularly relevant. Despite this, the show remains reliably crowd-pleasing and family-friendly, with a string of set pieces to delight those who return year after year.

The secret ingredient in this year's production appears to be its ability to balance expected jokes with genuine surprises, keeping both cast and audience on their toes. With Robin Simpson at his best as the dame, it's no wonder this show is once again York's festive crowd-pleaser.

Meh, I'm not convinced about all this fuss around the "Sleeping Beauty" panto 🤔. The reviewer says Paul Hendy's production feels solidly bedded in, but what does that even mean? Is it just a fancy way of saying it's old and familiar? I want to see some actual analysis or stats on how this year's show compares to previous ones. Easy cracks at Hull and Nigel Farage feel like shallow attempts at relevance - are they really trying to be edgy now? 🤷‍♂️ And what about the supporting cast? Is Robin Simpson's performance that special? Did he do any interviews to back up all these glowing claims? I need some more info before I can jump on the bandwagon 😐.

I don’t usually comment but I think what's really working for this year’s panto is how it's managed to appeal to both old and new audiences 🤔. I mean, my niece loves the silly jokes and slapstick humor, while my mate's kid is just learning about pantomime and they're both laughing together like crazy 😂. The cast has definitely done a great job of delivering those perfect laughs without being too cheesy. But, can't help feeling that this year's show might've been a bit... safe? Like, it relies on the usual tricks to get people giggling, rather than trying something new and really pushing the boundaries 🎭. Still, if you're looking for a fun night out with the family, I'd say give it a try! 👍

aww i'm so happy for robin simpson as nurse nellie 🤣👏... he's literally stealing the show! 💥 the supporting cast is amazing too 👫🎭 and that double act by jennie dale and jocasta almgill had me dying laughing 😂💀. but yeah, i feel like some of the jokes felt a bit forced this year 🤔... maybe it was just trying to be too inclusive? 🌈 still though, it's panto at its finest 🎄👏

I'm loving how the York Theatre Royal's "Sleeping Beauty" panto has nailed that perfect blend of slapstick humor & witty wordplay 😂! The cast's chemistry is undeniable, and Robin Simpson's Nurse Nellie is pure comedic gold 🤣. What I find fascinating is how the production expertly strikes a balance between tried-and-true formulas & fresh surprises - it's clear they've honed in on what works for a reason! 👏

I'm loving the "Sleeping Beauty" panto at York Theatre Royal 🤣! They always know how to bring out the kid in me during the festive season. I was giggling so hard during Nurse Nellie's bits, it was like he was riffing off my own mistakes 😂. The supporting cast is spot on too, especially the two fairies who had me chuckling nonstop 🤣. A bit of local flavour would've made it even more special, but overall, it's still that feel-good panto magic ✨.

I feel like they're just phoning it in with the panto formula 🤣 I mean, set pieces, daft comedy routines, and puns galore - we've seen it all before! But you know what? It still works because of that solid foundation. And oh man, Robin Simpson as Nurse Nellie is hilarious 😂 I love how he just goes for it with those slip-ups. The supporting cast is on point too, especially the fairy duo 🧚‍♀️🧚‍♂️. What's weird though is that they didn't really try to put any more local spin into it this year...

I'm not sold on the whole panto thing, you know? I mean, I love a good laugh, but some of these jokes just feel like they're phoned in 🤣. And don't even get me started on how predictable it all is – the slapstick comedy, the over-the-top set pieces... it's like they're checking boxes off a list instead of trying to come up with something truly original 📝.

And I'm not sure why local references are so important in panto. Can't they just focus on making the show fun for everyone? 🤷‍♂️ It feels like there's always one person (in this case, Nigel Farage) who gets picked out and made to be the butt of a joke. Not cool, mate 😒.

Give me something with a bit more substance any day... but hey, if it's what the masses want, I won't argue 🤪. The cast seems solid, though – Robin Simpson as Nurse Nellie is definitely on point 💁‍♂️.

I was literally LOLing when I watched "Sleeping Beauty" panto at York Theatre Royal 🤣🎭! Paul Hendy's production just gets better and better, and Robin Simpson as Nurse Nellie is absolutely phenomenal, his energy is infectious! The supporting cast is also super talented, especially the double act of fairies - they had me giggling so hard 🤣👯‍♀️. I love that it still has that classic panto feel but with some fresh surprises too! 👏 What's your fave part about this year's show?
