Houston Police Department Announces Arrest in Christmas Day Shooting Death
A suspect has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting that took place on Christmas Day in southwest Houston, the police department announced on Tuesday.
According to authorities, 39-year-old Jonathon Ross is facing charges after Desmond Butler, 25, was shot and killed at around 1:05 am on December 25. Butler had driven his gray Honda Pilot into a gas station parking lot when he was approached by two individuals in a black GMC. One of the suspects, identified as Mata, got out of the vehicle and began chasing Butler's car before opening fire, striking him multiple times.
Butler attempted to flee but crashed his car into a pole after being hit by gunfire. The suspects then sped away from the scene, with Mata later turning himself in on January 14. He was booked into the Harris County Jail following his arrest.
Police say that Butler's female passenger was mistakenly believed to be Mata's daughter, who had been allegedly assaulted by her boyfriend. However, it appears that no relation existed between the two parties. The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation.
Ross has been charged in connection with Butler's murder and is being held without bail.
