The Ashes 2025 - day two: England's Jamie Smith is controversially dismissed by third umpire

Controversy Surrounds Smith's Dismissal in Perth

Jamie Smith, the England batsman, was given out caught behind by the third umpire on day two of the first Ashes Test in Perth, sparking heated debate among fans and experts alike.

The incident occurred when Smith, who was batting at number three for England, was trying to play a delicate cover drive. However, the Australian bowler, James Pattinson, had been given the run-out signal by the third umpire, citing that the ball would have hit the stumps if it hadn't bounced off the pad of wicket-keeper Marcus Harris.

The on-field umpires initially gave Smith out, but after a lengthy review, the decision was overturned. However, many fans and pundits felt that the original verdict was correct, arguing that the third umpire had made an error in calling the ball dead.

Smith's dismissal sparked a heated debate among cricket experts, with some hailing it as one of the most contentious decisions in recent Ashes history. "It's not often you see a decision like that overturned at this stage of the game," said former England cricketer Michael Vaughan. "But you can't deny the ball would have hit the stumps if it hadn't bounced off Smith's pad."

The incident has also raised questions about the effectiveness of the third umpire system in modern cricket. While technology has improved significantly since its introduction, there is still room for human error and controversy.

As the match continues, fans will be keeping a close eye on the developments to see how this controversy affects the outcome of the game. Will Smith's dismissal prove costly for England, or will they be able to recover from this setback? Only time will tell.

🤦‍♂️ I mean, what a shocking turn of events! The third umpire finally gets it right and reverses the out call... only to have everyone else going "wait, no, you made it wrong again!" 😂 I'm starting to think that's just how the Ashes go - endless debate and controversy. It's not like it's a new thing or anything. And can we talk about how technology is still a bit of a wild card in cricket? One minute it's saving your life, the next it's screwing up an out call... 🤷‍♂️

Omg that was such a close call 🤯, i feel so bad for smith, he got really unlucky with that one 😔. I know how frustrating it must be when the 3rd umpire gets it wrong, u can't even try to make sense of it afterwards 💭. The technology is supposed to be in place to prevent these kinds of errors, but sometimes it just doesn't work out 🤦‍♂️. Hopefully england can bounce back from this and show some great cricket later on 🙏.

I feel for the poor umpire, you know, making split-second decisions under pressure. It's easy to second-guess when you're watching on TV. I mean, who wouldn't want to see that ball hit the stumps instead of just bouncing off the pad? 🤔 But the thing is, we can't expect perfection from humans, especially in a high-stakes game like Ashes. The third umpire system is just one of those things that's gonna make mistakes - it's how you learn from them and improve that matters.

And let's not forget, Smith's still got this! He's a pro, he's gonna bounce back from whatever controversy this causes. That's the thing about sports - it's not always about individual performance, but about how you respond to setbacks as a team. So, fingers crossed for England and their fans 😊.

I'm totally vibing with @MichaelVaughan on this one 🙌. That decision was sketchy at best! I mean, you gotta watch the replay and see how that ball bounces off Smith's pad 🤔. If it didn't hit the stumps, why did the third umpire call it dead? It's all about the tech, fam! 👀 #CricketControversy #ThirdUmpireFail #Ashes2019

I'm so confused about that Aussie umpire 🤯... I mean, I get why people are up in arms, but at the same time, you've gotta respect the third umpire's call after all those reviews 🙏. It's like they're saying one thing and then another with that technology 😒. Still, if it was Smith who got caught out, he should've known better than to try a cover drive on a short ball ⚾️... I'm not sure how this will affect the game yet, but it'll be interesting to see how England bounces back from this 🎯

😊 So I'm watching this Ashes Test and it's getting crazy! The way that third umpire was wrong is just mind-blowing 🤯. They clearly saw the ball hit the pads but still said it would've hit the stumps... what a difference a few millimeters makes! 🌟 Anyway, as much as I think Smith should be given out, I do get why they overruled it - umpiring is a tough job and you can't just blame tech for everything 🤖. But yeah, it's definitely raised questions about how reliable the system is... maybe some changes are needed to make sure we see more accurate calls 📊?
