US President Donald Trump has sparked confusion over his stance on the "MAHA" movement, which he pardoned two Thanksgiving turkeys for despite expressing doubts about their alignment with the initiative.
During a ceremony at which the turkeys were set to be spared from slaughter, Trump read out a speech in which the birds would be referred to as "MAHA", an acronym for Make America Healthy Again. However, when discussing the movement, Trump appeared unconvinced, describing himself and the turkeys as both being overweight despite belonging to MAHA.
Trump's remarks, however, suggest that he may not fully understand the principles behind the MAHA initiative. The Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a key figure in promoting the idea, has pushed for policies aimed at reducing obesity, including limiting fast food restaurant offerings and increasing the use of beef tallow as an alternative to seed oils.
Meanwhile, Trump repeatedly targeted Illinois Governor JB Pritzker over his weight, with one instance where he called the governor a "big fat slob". The president later clarified that he would not discuss Pritzker's weight but instead roasted him during the turkey pardoning ceremony.
Trump did mention wanting to lose some pounds himself and hinted at eating a Thanksgiving turkey.
