UK says it 'will never compromise on national security' after Trump calls Chagos deal 'act of great stupidity' – UK politics live

The article discusses the controversy surrounding Donald Trump's tweet about the Chagos Islands deal between the UK and Mauritius. The UK government has defended the deal, which secures the future of the island and allows the US to maintain its military base on Diego Garcia. However, Trump's tweet has been criticized for being insulting and embarrassing for Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The article also reports on interviews with Darren Jones, the Cabinet Office minister and chief secretary to the PM, who defended the Chagos Islands deal and played down the significance of Trump's tweet. Jones stated that British diplomacy is working and that the UK will continue to maintain good relations with the US despite the disagreement over Greenland.

Additionally, the article mentions that Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative MP for Harlow, has been on a visit in south-west London and will be speaking at an event in the evening. The article also notes that there are several other events scheduled throughout the day, including debates in Parliament and statements from government ministers.

Overall, the article provides updates on the ongoing controversy over Trump's tweet about the Chagos Islands deal and the UK's relations with the US. It also reports on the responses of British politicians and officials to the criticism of the deal.

The guy is just trolling now... 😂 I mean, can't he just keep his mouth shut? The whole thing is just awkward for PM Starmer and everyone else in the UK government. And what's with this business about Greenland? 🤔 I'm not even sure how that fits into the conversation. Anyway, it's just another example of Trump being Trump and stirring up drama wherever he goes. 😒

OMG, I'm so done with this whole thing 🤯! Like, can't they just be civil about it? Trump thinks he's funny, but really he's just being a massive twit 😂. And Jones is like, trying to save face, but honestly, who needs diplomacy when you've got a Twitter rant? 🙄 Still, I feel for the PM, he's trying his best, and we should support him 👍. But, tbh, Kemi Badenoch is always good for a drama-filled event 😉. Guess we'll just have to wait and see what she says tonight 💬.

I'm a bit worried about this whole thing 🤔... I mean, I get that Trump's just saying what he thinks, but can't he think before he tweets? 😂 It's not exactly the most diplomatic approach, is it? And yeah, Keir Starmer didn't take it lying down, so I reckon he's trying to show some backbone there 🙌. But at the same time, it's a bit dodgy that Trump's being all condescending towards PM Starmer... it's not exactly the kind of thing you want to see between allies 👊. And what's with this "we're still mates" vibe from Darren Jones? 🤷‍♂️ Is he seriously saying that just because they disagree on one thing, everything else is good between them? I'm not so sure...

I think it's totally fine if Trump tweeted what he did. I mean, the guy's got a reputation for being bold, right? 🤔 If Starmer can't take a joke about being 'embarrassing', maybe he should toughen up and focus on his own job rather than getting all worked up over some silly tweet. And let's be real, the Chagos Islands deal is probably more complicated than just Trump's one tweet. The UK government knows what they're doing, and if they've got a good reason for agreeing to it, that's all that matters. I'm not buying into all the fuss about it... 🙄

I don’t usually comment but I have to say that this whole thing is really weird 🤔... like, who gets insulted by a tweet about some islands? Trump just went straight for Keir Starmer without even trying to be diplomatic 💁‍♂️. And then the UK government is all like "oh, British diplomacy is working" but I don’t think that's what it sounds like at all 😒... It feels more like they're just being really passive-aggressive and hoping Trump gets bored with it 🤷‍♂️. The fact that Kemi Badenoch was on a visit in London and will be speaking about this makes me wonder if there’s some kind of game going on behind the scenes 🎲... I don’t know, maybe I’m just reading too much into it 😅. Anyway, it's definitely been an interesting day in British politics! 👀

omg u no wut's goin on w/ trump & uk 🤯 he just tweeted somethin about chagos islands & now keir starmer is all embarrassed lol. but like, seriously, i think trumps tweet was a bit harsh 😂. jones from the cabinet office tried to defend it tho and said british diplomacy is still strong 💪. meanwhile kemi badenoch is doin her thing in london 📍. anywayz its all good between us & uk cuz they got a deal secured and that's wat matters rn 🤷‍♀️

Ugh I'm so done with tweets 🤯! Like seriously can't these world leaders just have a respectful convo without throwing shade? 😒 Trump's tweet was completely out of line and I'm surprised anyone from the UK government wasn't more fired up about it, tbh 🙄. The Chagos Islands deal is already super complicated and sensitive, so bringing in all this drama is just unnecessary 💔. And can we please talk about how embarrassing it must be for PM Starmer to have his PM get roasted like that 😳? The fact that the UK is trying to downplay Trump's tweet is interesting, I think they're trying to avoid rocking the boat with their US allies 👥. But honestly, it'd be better if they just explained why the deal was necessary and what benefits it brings 🤔

I think it's a bit weird when world leaders start having public spats like that... I mean, what's the point of tweeting about something so serious? It just comes across as petty and unprofessional. And now the UK's all over it, trying to defend their position... it feels like they're trying too hard to prove a point. Meanwhile, the US is getting a bit embarrassed, what with Trump's tweet being shot down by everyone. It's just one of those situations where you wish people would keep their mouths shut and focus on actually doing some diplomacy instead of all this Twitter noise 🤦‍♂️💬

I mean, it's just so weird that we're still even talking about this stuff. Like, can't we all just get along? 🤷‍♀️ Trump's tweet was pretty outrageous if you ask me. The guy's got some serious ego problems and can't even be bothered to keep a straight face on Twitter.

And meanwhile, the UK's got its own issues, what with Brexit and all that jazz. It's not like they're in the clear just because Trump said something snarky about their Prime Minister. 🤦‍♂️ But honestly, I think we should be focusing on some real problems instead of getting bogged down in Twitter feuds.

I'm also kinda curious about what Kemi Badenoch is going to say at her event today. Is she gonna try and spin the situation in a way that'll make us all feel better? Or will she just sit there and smile while everyone's having a nervous breakdown? 🤔 Either way, I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

can't believe trump is still at it 🤯 this whole chagos islands thing is just so messed up, like how can you just take someone else's land without even trying to make it right? and now our own gov't is basically being led by him 🙄 poor keir starmer is stuck in this awkward situation... anyway, gotta wonder what's really going on behind the scenes 🤔 and who benefits from this whole deal 🤑

I'm a bit worried about how this whole thing is playing out 🤔. I mean, Trump's tweet was pretty harsh, but at the same time, the UK gov't is all like "oh, we're not bothered" 😒. Meanwhile, PM Starmer is getting roasted and it's hard to see why Kemi Badenoch would be speaking about this on her visit to London 🤷‍♀️. Can't we just have a civil discussion about something that affects the whole country? 💬 I'm sure there are more important things going on in politics, like climate change and NHS funding 😒. But no, we're stuck on this Chagos Islands drama 🌴. Can't we all just take a deep breath and try to understand each other's perspectives 👍?

🤷‍♂️ I mean, can't believe they're still making such a big deal out of this whole thing 🙄. Like, it's just a tweet, right? But nope, Trump had to go and insult PM Starmer, so now everyone's all up in arms about it 💁‍♂️. And what really gets me is that they're all acting like it's some huge scandal 🤔. Newsflash: it's not, guys 😅. The Chagos Islands deal is still gonna happen no matter what, and Trump can tweet all he wants 📱. But hey, at least we've got some juicy tea on Kemi Badenoch's visit to SW London 🍵... I guess that's something, right? 🙃

OMG, can you believe what Trump just said about the Chagos Islands? 🤯 Like, I get it, he's trying to stir up drama, but did he really have to diss Keir Starmer like that? 🙄 The guy's trying to do his job and keep the peace between the UK and US, and Trump just comes out swinging. It's pretty embarrassing for PM Starmer, if you ask me. 😳 I feel bad for him, he's got a tough job already with Brexit and all that. But at least some of our politicians are standing up to Trump and defending British diplomacy. Like Darren Jones, who spoke out about the deal being solid and that we'll still keep it friendly with the US despite this disagreement. Fingers crossed it gets resolved soon and we can move on from this drama 💁‍♀️

trump's tweet is lowkey savage 💁‍♂️, but like, who actually cares? it's not like the UK is gonna change its stance just 'cause trump said some stuff 🤷‍♂️. i mean, keir starmer's trying to keep a straight face, but we all know he's fuming on the inside 😒. and darren jones just plays dumb as usual 🙃. meanwhile, kemi badenoch is over here being her usual awkward self 🤦‍♀️. anyway, i guess it's just another day in british politics, where drama and backstabbing are just part of the job description 💔.

🤔 I don't think Trump's tweet was that bad... it's just a strong opinion, you know? The thing is, Britain did agree to help the US out with their base in the Chagos Islands, so yeah, it's not like they were being super generous or anything. 🤷‍♂️

But seriously, I do think it's weird how Trump was so quick to go after PM Starmer on Twitter. It seems like it might have been a bit of a distraction from what's really going on with the Chagos Islands deal itself... I mean, is it even that important? 🤷‍♂️

It sounds like everyone's just trying to smooth things over and keep the relationship between Britain and the US intact. And honestly, can't we all just get along? 😊

🤔 I gotta say, Trump's tweet about the Chagos Islands was super awkward 💁‍♂️. Like, who tweets insults at the PM? 🚫 And Jones trying to downplay it with that diplomatic speak... just doesn't cut it 🙄. I mean, what's the real issue here? The deal itself or Trump being a bit of a sore loser? 🤷‍♂️ Can we just focus on the facts and not make this all about Trump's ego? 🙃

Trump's tweet about the Chagos Islands deal is pretty cringeworthy... 🤦‍♂️ I mean, who tries to troll PM Starmer like that? 😒 It's all about who can be more diplomatic, right? The UK government's trying to play it cool while Trump just keeps stirring up drama. 🙄 On a lighter note, has anyone seen Kemi Badenoch around south-west London? 📍 They're always good for a lively debate or two! 💬

I'm so late to this thread lol 🤦‍♂️ I just saw this article and I gotta say, Trump's tweet was pretty low-key 😒. I mean, I get why Keir Starmer got defensive, but it seems like a pretty diplomatic row over the Chagos Islands deal. Can't we all just agree to disagree? And what's with the big fuss about Trump saying something insulting about PM Starmer? Like, who hasn't had their name dragged through the mud on Twitter at some point? 🤷‍♂️ Jones seemed like a pretty level-headed guy in that interview, though. I'm still not sure how this whole deal works out for the UK and US, but I guess only time will tell 🕰️

omg i cant even believe trump did that 😂🙈 what was he thinking?? his tweet was soooo rude, didnt think about how it would affect keir starmer 🤦‍♂️ and now british diplomacy is all like "oh no we have to fix this" 🙏 anyway, gotta say i'm loving the drama over in london today 💁‍♀️ it's like they're doing a whole season of game of thrones or something 🔥
