Wall of Tears: 50ft Brooklyn mural pays tribute to children killed in Gaza

Artist Phil Buehler has unveiled a new mural in Brooklyn titled "Wall of Tears," which serves as a poignant tribute to 18,457 children killed in Gaza between October 2023 and July 2025. Created with the help of Radio Free Brooklyn, the massive art installation stretches for 50 feet along Grattan Street, listing the names of the deceased children in chronological order, according to data from the Gaza health ministry.

Buehler's work is not without its challenges, as he acknowledges that the scale of these tragic events can be overwhelming. "A single death is a tragedy," he notes, "a million deaths is a statistic." The Wall of Tears aims to humanize this statistic by showcasing the names and faces of the children who lost their lives, accompanied by stories and photos, drawing on reports from reputable sources such as the Guardian and Washington Post.

The mural has been sparked controversy in New York, where nearly 1 million Jews reside, with some attempting to brand efforts to highlight Palestinian suffering as antisemitic. Buehler rejects this notion, emphasizing that open dialogue is essential for addressing these complex issues. "You can't have that conversation at all," he says. "I worry a little bit about that with this piece."

The Wall of Tears has also drawn connections to other notable murals created by Buehler, including the Wall of Lies and the Empty Beds series. However, it is arguably his most personal and emotionally charged work to date.

In an effort to honor the memory of five-year-old Hind Rajab, who was killed during the conflict, a real-life audio recording of her final hours has been incorporated into the mural. This poignant moment serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of war.

Buehler's dedication to using art as a tool for social commentary is evident in his work on the Wall of Tears. As he hopes that viewers will come away from this installation with a sense of empathy and understanding, it remains to be seen whether his message will resonate in a culture often divided by tribalism.

omg 🀯 this mural is literally hauntingly beautiful... phil buehler is a genius for tackling such a tough topic like gaza and keeping it so personal & human πŸ™ the way he incorporated hind's final audio recording takes it to a whole new level 😭 u gotta wonder what ppl thinkin they can just erase/ignore these facts by callin it antisemitic tho πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ newsflash: highlighting suffering β‰  being anti anything... we need more art like this, not less πŸ’–

πŸ€” I'm still trying to process the massive scale of child casualties in Gaza over the past 2 years... it's like, can't we just talk about this without getting labeled as anti-Semitic? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ Phil Buehler's art piece is a beautiful way to humanize the numbers and tell the stories of these kids. I mean, seeing their names and faces on that wall is a harsh reminder of what's happening in Gaza... it's not just stats or news headlines, it's real people with families and friends who loved them. We need more art like this, not less πŸŽ¨πŸ’•

πŸ˜” I just saw this mural in Brooklyn called "Wall of Tears" and I gotta say, it's a real eye-opener. It's heartbreaking to think about all those kids who lost their lives in Gaza... 18,457 is a number that's hard to wrap your head around. I feel for Phil Buehler for tackling this tough subject, but at the same time, I'm so grateful he's using his art to bring attention to it. The fact that he's listing the names of the kids in chronological order and sharing their stories is really powerful. It's not just about numbers or statistics; it's about humanizing the victims of war. We need more people like Phil who are willing to have these hard conversations and create art that sparks empathy and understanding πŸ€πŸ’•

πŸ˜• I'm still trying to process the emotions behind "Wall of Tears". It's heartbreaking to think about 18k+ kids losing their lives & how that number gets lost in statistics πŸ“Š. Phil Buehler is a genius for making this art installation, but I can understand why it might be triggering for some people πŸ‘Ί. As someone who loves art, I'm all for using it as a tool to spark conversations about tough issues πŸ’¬. But we gotta be careful not to silence others or make them feel uncomfortable πŸ˜“. It's okay to disagree & have different perspectives 🀝. Buehler's use of real-life audio recording in the mural is so powerful & emotional - it really drives home the human cost of war πŸ’”. I just hope his message can reach some people and create a little more empathy & understanding 🀞

I don’t usually comment but I have to say, seeing all those names listed out on the wall is just heartbreaking πŸ€•... I mean, 18,457 kids can't even be remembered properly because of war? It's like, we're supposed to forget about them or something? The audio recording thing with Hind Rajab is just too much for me... it gives you chills every time you think about what she was going through those last few hours 🎧. I don't get why people are already judging Phil Buehler's work as antisemitic, like, isn't the point of art to spark conversations and raise awareness? Can't we just listen for once without trying to silence each other?

Ugh I'm getting chills just thinking about it 🀯 the wall is so heartbreaking, I can imagine how overwhelming it must've been for Phil Buehler to work on that πŸ˜” I mean, listing 18k+ names of kids who died in Gaza? That's insane πŸ’€ but at least he's doing something with his art to bring attention to this issue and maybe, just maybe, open some eyes πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I'm not sure if it'll make a difference in the grand scheme of things, but what the heck, right? We gotta try, you know? 😊

omg i'm literally shook by phil buehler's new mural "wall of tears" 🀯 it's so sad but also super powerful, i love how he used art to honor the memory of those kids who lost their lives in gaza πŸ’” i know some ppl might try to say its antisemitic but phil is right, we gotta have open dialogue about this stuff and not just stick to one perspective 🀝 the way he incorporated hind's final audio rec into the mural? 😭 it's just... wow. phil buehler is a total genius and i'm so grateful for artists like him who use their talents to spread love and awareness instead of hate πŸ’•

Man, this new mural in Brooklyn is like totally somethin' else! I mean, Phil Buehler's got some serious guts creatin' a piece that's gonna spark controversy, but at the same time, it's like, necessary, you know? 18,457 kids killed in Gaza... that's just numbers, not names and faces till you see 'em on a wall. I'm gettin' chills just thinkin' about it 🀯

And I gotta say, the way Buehler's incorporatin' stories and photos is like... wow. It's not just a pretty picture, it's a tribute to these kids who didn't get to live their lives. And that audio recording of Hind Rajab? *sigh* You can feel the pain and the sadness in that moment. It's like Buehler's sayin', "Hey, this is real people, not just stats"

I'm all for open dialogue, 'cause it's the only way we're gonna move forward from all this, but I also get why some folks might be upset. The whole antisemitic thing is like... ugh, let's just call a spitting image of racism what it is, ya know? But Buehler's not havin' that, and I'm here for it πŸ’ͺ

This mural's got me thinkin', though... how do we make sure our messages don't get lost in the noise? How do we keep the conversation goin' when people are already on their own side of the divide? Buehler's Wall of Tears might just be the wake-up call we need 🚨

I'm thinking about Phil Buehler's new mural in Brooklyn... πŸ€” 50 feet of names and faces is crazy, but I guess that's what happens when you're trying to humanize so many numbers πŸ’”. It's like, yeah, a million deaths is still just a number, but at least here it's a name, a face, a story... πŸ“š I feel bad for the family of that 5-year-old girl whose final hours are played back in the mural - can you imagine? 😭 And I get why some people would be upset about this piece being called antisemitic, but at the same time, isn't the point to talk about these issues and try to understand each other's perspectives? 🀝 It's a tough one...

This mural is SO powerful 🀯, I mean, can you even imagine seeing 18k+ kids' names on a wall? It's like, we're talking about human beings here, not just stats or news headlines. Phil Buehler is doing an amazing job of making us feel the weight of what's happening in Gaza. The fact that they included real audio recordings of kids... it's just heartbreaking πŸ˜”.

But yeah, I can see why some people are gonna get upset about it. I mean, we live in a city with a huge Jewish community, and there are always gonna be people who feel uncomfortable talking about this stuff. But at the end of the day, isn't that what art is for? To challenge our perspectives and make us think?

I love how Buehler is pushing back against those who say his mural is antisemitic. Like, can we even have a conversation without being told what to think or feel? I wish more people were having these kinds of nuanced discussions about the world we live in.

Anyway, the Wall of Tears is definitely giving me chills 😡. It's a reminder that there are still kids dying over here, and it's up to us to listen and learn. Let's do better, NYC πŸŒ†.

I'm really feeling uneasy about this new mural in Brooklyn... 50 feet of names and faces is just so overwhelming 🀯. I think Phil Buehler is trying to do something amazing with art, but it's not going to be easy. The whole "Wall of Tears" thing feels like a huge responsibility, you know? And yeah, I get that some people might try to spin this as antisemitic or whatever... but honestly, I think they're missing the point πŸ™„. This mural is about humanizing all these statistics and trying to make us feel something for these kids who lost their lives πŸ’”. It's not going to be easy to talk about, but we gotta try, right? Maybe we can even use it as a starting point for some real conversations? 🀝

I mean, can you blame Phil Buehler for wanting to create something like the Wall of Tears? Like, 18k+ kids dead is some next-level tragedy 🀯. It's not like he's asking people to mourn or anything (oh wait, that's exactly what he's doing). The whole antisemitic thing is just...meh, can't we all just get along and talk about the actual issues here? Like, I'm not seeing any Jews being killed in Gaza πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. But hey, if Phil wants to use his art to humanize some tragic stats, who am I to judge? Maybe he's onto something with this one...or maybe it's just a wall of tears (get it?) πŸ˜’

πŸ€” I think its super sad what's happening in Gaza & the fact that we're still talking about children being killed is just devastating πŸŒŽπŸ’”. I mean, the Wall of Tears is such a powerful reminder of what's going on, but it also makes me wonder if people are even listening to each other right now? πŸ—£οΈ It's like Buehler says, we need open dialogue to talk about these issues, not just sit in silence. πŸ’¬ But at the same time, I can see why some people might be upset & think its antisemitic... it's a super tricky situation & I don't know what anyone should do πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ.

this artwork is so powerful 🀯 i mean its not just some name list on a wall its like you can actually feel the weight of all those lives lost...the fact that hind rajab's final audio recording is included is giving me chills 🎧 i dont think anyone can say this art is antisemitic when its trying to humanize victims and spark open dialogue 🀝 the nyc jew community needs to chill out and actually talk about what these events mean to them.

πŸ€” I'm all for Phil Buehler's latest mural, but I gotta say, 50 feet is kinda a lot, you feel? It's like, yeah, we get it, these kids were murdered, but does it really need to be that long? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Still, I appreciate the effort and the way he's trying to humanize the numbers. The audio recording of Hind Rajab's final hours is super emotional, though - that's some heavy stuff πŸ’”. I hope people can get past their differences and just... feel something for a sec πŸ˜”. It's not always easy to talk about these things, but like Buehler said, we gotta keep trying 🀞.

omg I'm literally shook by this mural 🀯🌎!! Phil Buehler's work is truly heart-wrenching & I love how he's trying to humanize the stats on those tiny lives lost πŸ’”. Incorporating Hind's final audio recording into the mural? πŸ˜πŸ‘Ά my tears just kept flowing πŸ’§! can we please have more artists using their platform for these kinds of conversations? πŸ€—πŸ’¬
