Western leaders say U.S. 28-point Ukraine peace plan needs "additional work"

Western leaders have expressed concerns that a 28-point peace plan proposed by the US for Ukraine needs significant revisions, saying it's "not ready" to be finalized. The plan, which was shared with Ukrainian and Russian officials this week, includes several key demands from Moscow, including recognition of Crimea and a rejection of NATO membership.

While the European Union and its member states welcomed the plan as a starting point for negotiations, they emphasized that further work is needed to ensure it addresses Ukraine's concerns. "We believe, therefore, that the draft is a basis which will require additional work," said a joint statement from Western leaders.

The US peace plan has sparked alarm in Kyiv and European capitals, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warning that his country faces a tough choice between preserving American support or standing up for its sovereignty. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz insisted that Kyiv needs robust guarantees to ensure the security of its people.

US President Donald Trump has said he wants an answer from Zelenskyy on the plan by Thanksgiving, but may extend the deadline if necessary. However, three US senators claim that the plan was not drafted by the US administration, sparking controversy over its origins.

Zelenskyy and other Ukrainian officials will meet with a US delegation in Switzerland to discuss the proposal, which is seen as a crucial step towards finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict. European leaders have cautioned against rushing a peace deal, emphasizing the need for robust guarantees to ensure Ukraine's security.

The 28-point plan includes key elements such as the recognition of Crimea and the rejection of NATO membership, which has raised concerns among Ukrainian officials. The plan also proposes limitations on Ukraine's armed forces, which would leave the country vulnerable to future attack.

As negotiations continue, tensions between Ukraine and Russia remain high. Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged that Moscow had received the text of the 28-point plan through official channels, but warned that the US administration was unable to secure the consent of the Ukrainian side.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has resulted in millions of deaths and economic losses for the country. Zelenskyy marked Holodomor Memorial Day by reaffirming his commitment to defending Ukraine against Russian aggression, saying "we are once again defending ourselves against Russia, which has not changed and is once again bringing death."

This 28-point plan is like drawing a circle around an already burning fire πŸš’. You can't just ignore the fact that Ukraine's sovereignty is on the line here. I get it, both sides want peace, but what's the point of negotiations if one side gets to dictate terms? Russia is trying to strangle Ukraine with recognition of Crimea and NATO membership rejections - it's like they're playing a game of "Russia or USA" 🀝. Can't we just have a conversation about mutual security guarantees instead of playing this power game? The US needs to be more transparent about the plan's origins too, this shady stuff is not helping...

omg I'm literally shaking with anxiety thinking about this peace plan 🀯 it's like Western leaders are trying to hold Ukraine's hand while Russia is just sitting there waiting for them to give in πŸ˜’ the whole Crimea thing is giving me PTSD πŸ’” like what if Zelenskyy has to choose between his country and American support? 🀝 can't he just have both?!?! πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ also, Trump wants an answer by Thanksgiving?!?! that's like asking someone to solve world hunger in one day πŸ•°οΈ it's not even possible! 🌎 what if the plan is just a Trojan horse for Russia? 😈 does anyone trust Putin anymore? πŸ€”

πŸ€” I think it's a tough spot for Ukraine, ya know? On one hand, they need American support to keep going, but on the other hand, they can't just give in to all these demands from Russia. The 28-point plan sounds like a good starting point, but there are definitely some concerns about it being too favorable to Moscow. 🀝 I mean, recognition of Crimea? That's like, a huge deal for Ukraine. And NATO membership? It's like, they're basically asking the US to stick its neck out for them. πŸ’― But at the same time, if they don't get some kind of guarantee for their security, it's gonna be hard for them to feel confident about making any deals. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ The thing is, both sides have valid points, but somehow you gotta find that sweet spot where everyone feels like they're getting what they need without completely compromising their values. It's a real tough nut to crack, you know? 😬

I think it's weird that Western leaders want revisions to the US peace plan πŸ€”. They're basically saying it's not good enough for Ukraine... but what do they know? πŸ™„ I mean, Ukraine needs something, right? It's been a mess over there for ages. But can we really trust the US on this one? Like, did Trump even write that plan or was someone else working behind the scenes? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I don't get why Zelenskyy is stressing about it too... isn't he worried more about Russia invading again and killing all those people? πŸ’” The 28-point plan sounds pretty meh to me, but hey, if it's what Ukraine wants, then that's the way to go. Maybe they can make some changes that will actually help them out in the long run? 🀞

πŸ€— I'm so worried about Ukraine right now... it's like they're caught in the middle of this huge conflict and nobody knows what's going to happen next. It's just so sad that millions of people have lost their lives and families are still suffering. 🌟

And can you even imagine how hard it must be for Zelenskyy, trying to make decisions with such a big weight on his shoulders? The US plan might not be ready yet, but what if Ukraine has to choose between America's support and its own sovereignty? That sounds like a really tough spot to be in πŸ€•.

I wish there was more transparency about the 28-point plan - who actually drafted it? Is it even trustworthy? And can we trust that Russia will agree to the terms? It's just so complicated... πŸ’”

I'm gettin' a bad vibe from this whole thing πŸ˜’. The US just proposes a peace plan that includes recognition of Crimea, and now Western leaders are sayin' it needs revisions? That's like tryin' to fix a broken vase with more glue 🀯. And what's with the limits on Ukraine's armed forces? It's like they're expectin' us to sit back and be all cozy while Russia keeps stabbin' us in the back πŸ”ͺ.

I'm worried about Zelenskyy, man. He's got a tough choice between takin' US cash and standin' up for his own country's sovereignty πŸ’Έ vs 🌟. I get that European leaders want robust guarantees, but is it too much to ask for some real concessions from Russia? Like, have they even apologized for annexin' Crimea yet? πŸ€”

And what's the hurry, anyway? Can't we just take a deep breath and figure this out? πŸ™. I'm all for findin' peace, but at what cost? Not sure I trust Trump on this one, either πŸ€‘.

Ugh πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ, this peace plan is a joke. The US thinks it can just give away Crimea recognition and NATO membership rejection like that? πŸ˜‚ Not to mention the limitations on Ukraine's armed forces... what kind of security guarantees are we even talking about here? 🚫 It sounds like the US is just trying to appease Russia without actually doing anything concrete.

And don't even get me started on Trump's deadline πŸ•°οΈ. "Answer by Thanksgiving" or extend if necessary? Sounds like a diplomatic game of chicken to me. What's next, just gonna hand over Ukraine to Putin and be done with it? πŸ˜’ The whole thing is just so frustrating...
