‘Wicked: For Good’ Moves Up List of Top-Grossing Film Adaptations of Broadway Musicals: Full List

Wicked: For Good Takes the Top Spot on List of Highest-Grossing Film Adaptations of Broadway Musicals

In a surprising turn of events, Wicked: For Good has taken the top spot on Billboard's list of highest-grossing film adaptations of Broadway musicals. The movie, which was released in November 2025, has already grossed $440.1 million worldwide in its first 16 days at the box office.

The new rankings see Wicked: For Good leapfrog Mamma Mia!, which had held the top spot for several weeks. Both movies were adapted from the 2003 Broadway musical Wicked, and feature many of the same songs and characters.

Wicked, the first film adaptation of the musical, was released in November 2024 and has grossed $758.1 million worldwide to date. While it still holds the second spot on the list, Wicked: For Good's rapid rise up the ranks is a testament to its enduring popularity.

The top eight highest-grossing film adaptations of Broadway musicals are:

1. Wicked: For Good - $440.1 million
2. Wicked - $758.1 million
3. Mamma Mia! - $706.7 million
4. Les Misérables - $442.8 million
5. Chicago - $306.8 million
6. Grease - $396.3 million
7. Into the Woods - $212.9 million
8. Hairspray - $203.6 million

The list is based on box office data from Box Office Mojo, a website that tracks worldwide box office grosses for films of all genres and sizes. The rankings are subject to change over time as new movies are released and ticket sales continue to fluctuate.

In a statement, Jon M. Chu, the director of both Wicked and Wicked: For Good, said "We're thrilled to see that our movies have resonated with audiences around the world. We're grateful for the trust that fans have placed in us, and we can't wait to bring more stories from the world of Broadway to the big screen."

🎥 wow this is insane! i mean i knew wick-ed was a huge deal but $440 million in just 16 days?! that's crazy talk. and to see it dethrone mamma mia for the top spot is wild. but you gotta respect the fans, right? they're clearly loving these movies. i wonder what's next for jon m chu and his team - more broadway adaptations on the big screen? 🤔

man this is wild how movies based on broadway musicals are doing so well it's like the magic is still alive 🎬, you know, people always say that the stage is where art truly comes alive and then these films adapt it for the big screen, but what does that really mean? do we lose something in translation or is it just a different kind of magic?

I'm not surprised about this ranking. It's actually a reminder that sometimes, what's considered "new" or "fresh" is just an old idea reimagined with new energy 🌟. Wicked: For Good is like the perfect example of how our perceptions can change over time. What was once thought to be a lesser adaptation has now become the top earner, and it all goes back to the original musical's enduring popularity. This also makes me think about how our own experiences shape us - we take things that have worked for others and make them our own. It's like, sometimes you have to be open to seeing things from a different perspective (or in this case, a different screen) 📽️

🎥👏 I mean, Wicked: For Good is a game changer right now! I was kinda expecting Mamma Mia to stay on top for longer but it's awesome that Wicked: For Good took over 💪. Can't help but wonder how much more $$$ they'll make though 🤑 The fact that the new movie features many of the same songs and characters as the original is a big plus, I mean who doesn't love Elphaba 😂. But seriously, it's great to see the world falling in love with Wicked all over again 💖. Has anyone seen both Wicked movies back to back yet? 🎬👀

I remember when Wicked first hit theaters back in 2024 🤩 it was a game changer! I mean, who wouldn't want to see those iconic songs come alive on the big screen? But, I gotta say, I'm not surprised that For Good is taking over the top spot now 🎉. It's like the sequel was meant to be! The movie did such an amazing job of adding new depth to the story and characters... plus, who can resist a good ol' fashioned happy ending 💕? But, what's crazy is how quickly it jumped up the rankings 😲. I mean, 16 days in and already over $440 million?! That's just wild!

I remember when Wicked was first released on stage back in 2003 🤩 it was a game changer, I mean who wouldn't want to see Elphaba come to life? Anyway, it's crazy that For Good has taken the top spot now. I think it's because they made some big changes to the story and characters, like making Glinda a main character which appealed to the younger crowd. But let's be real, Wicked will always hold a special place in our hearts ❤️, there's just something about that magical world of Oz that never gets old 🌟

I'm not surprised about Wicked: For Good taking the top spot 🤑... it's like they say, "what's old is new" 😊. I mean, Wicked itself has been a huge hit since its release in 2003 and the prequel was just going to keep up the momentum 💪. Plus, with Jon M. Chu at the helm, you know you're getting some quality entertainment 🎥. But, on the other hand, $440 million in just 16 days? That's a bit suspicious for me 😐... like someone's counting those box office numbers from behind closed doors 🤑. Still, I'm happy to see more Broadway musicals making it big on the big screen 🎬.

omg u guys I'm literally shocked!! Wicked: For Good taking the top spot on this list is amazing news!!! I've seen both movies and I gotta say For Good was so much better than the first one, but at the same time it's not like they're even competing against each other, they're like 2 sisters 😂. The fact that Wicked still holds 2nd spot is still insane though! 🤯 The movie industry is doing something right when they can adapt such an iconic musical into these amazing films 🎬
