WSL talking points: Miedema proves doubters wrong and Chelsea stumble again

Liverpool's defence proved to be the difference-maker in their 0-0 draw against Chelsea at Anfield, as they held off a strong attacking effort from the visitors to earn a hard-fought point.

Chelsea, who had been on a 34-game unbeaten streak in the WSL, looked set to get back on track after Alyssa Thompson fired home a brilliant opener just nine minutes into the game. However, the Reds' defence, marshalled by captain Becca Thomas, dug deep and held firm throughout the first half.

The visitors introduced some new faces off the bench at halftime, including Lauren James and Aggie Beever-Jones, but Liverpool's solid shape ensured that Chelsea couldn't find a way through. The Reds, meanwhile, continued to push forward and equalised just before halftime through Beata Olsson's strike, sending the Anfield crowd wild.

Vivianne Miedema was the hero for Liverpool in the second half, producing a quintessential moment of quality with a perfectly timed sliding challenge on Julia Zigiotti Olme. The Dutch striker then unleashed a cutting-through ball for Bunny Shaw, who would go on to create several chances for her teammates in the final 20 minutes.

Despite their dominance, Arsenal were unable to find a way out of their slump after back-to-back draws against Tottenham and Bayern Munich. The Gunners dominated possession but created no clear-cut chances, with goalkeeper Lize Kop looking mostly untested throughout the game.

Leicester City set an unwanted record in Brighton by going 21 games without a win on the road, while West Ham Women finally found their feet after nine games without a league victory, beating Everton 3-1 to lift themselves out of the relegation zone. London City Lionesses also made some ground on the top five, moving within a point of Arsenal and Tottenham with a 3-1 win over Aston Villa.

As for Chelsea, their defeat marked the end of an eight-game winning streak in all competitions. With Manchester City three points ahead of them, the Blues will need to regroup and refocus if they want to mount a serious challenge for the title.

omg u guys, i am literally shook about chelsea's loss! their defense is like, wow 💥 becca thomas marshaling that backline was insane!!! and that 34-game unbeaten streak got broken in an instant 🤯 they had so many chances but just couldn't find the back of the net. and then liverpool comes along and shuts them down 🔒 beata olsson's goal was like a total game-changer, lol!

OH MY GOSH, CHelsea'S DEFENSE WAS SO STRONG!!! 🙌🏻 they just couldn't break through LIVERPOOL'S SOLID LINEUP! and that goal by Alyssa Thompson was absolute FIRE 🔥 but Liverpool's defense held firm and Becca Thomas did an AMAZING job leading them to a well-deserved point 💪🏻

AND WHAT A TURN OF EVENTS WHEN BEATA OLSSON EQUALIZED JUST BEFORE HALFTIME!!! 🎉 it got the Anfield crowd PUMPED UP and Vivianne Miedema was like a HERO for coming up with that PERFECTLY TIMED sliding challenge 😲 AND BUNNY SHAW WAS LIKE A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH 🔥 creating those chances left and right!

anyway, it looks like Chelsea's losing streak has officially started 🙅‍♀️ they'll have to regroup and refocus if they want to stay in the title hunt 💁‍♀️

.. I'm still trying to wrap my head around this 34 game unbeaten streak that Chelsea just snapped 💔. It's crazy how quickly fortunes can change in sports, right? One minute you're on top of the world, the next you're scrambling to get back on track 🔄. But what really caught my eye is how Liverpool's defence was the difference-maker in this one ⚡️. I mean, Becca Thomas and the lasses were like an impenetrable fortress out there! 🏰.

And then Liverpool goes and scores just before halftime through Beata Olsson? That's some next-level stuff 🔥. But what really won me over was Vivianne Miedema's sliding tackle on Julia Zigiotti Olme in the second half 🤯. I mean, that was pure quality right there! The way she read the game and timed her challenge to perfection... it's like watching a masterclass at work ⚽️.

For Chelsea, this defeat is definitely a setback, but they've got some big games coming up against Manchester City and other top teams 💪. Can they get back on track? Only time will tell 🕰️. But one thing's for sure – Liverpool are definitely back in the mix now 🔝!

can't believe chelsea's 34 game unbeaten streak just got dented like that 🤯. but fair play to liverpool's defence, they looked solid as stone 💪. it's not easy to stop someone on form like chelsea, especially with all those new signings off the bench 👀. and honestly, chelsea looked a bit disjointed without their superstar players, which might give teams some hope 🤔. still, 0-0 draws don't exactly thrill me 😐

🙄 I'm so over these WSL teams not being able to score for their lives! Like, Chelsea just had 34 games unbeaten but still can't seem to finish chances? And now they're gonna have to regroup after this loss? Meanwhile Liverpool's defence is the real MVP 🤩 Becca Thomas and Co. are absolute rockstars! And what's with Arsenal's slump? They used to be all about dominating possession but now they just can't create anything? 🤦‍♀️

I'm loving this level of competition in the WSL right now! Liverpool's defence was seriously solid and I think Becca Thomas is an absolute gem at captain. Chelsea thought they had it in the bag after that opener, but you can't underestimate the Reds' determination to hold off those attacks 🤯 They really deserved that point and it'll be interesting to see how they build on this momentum 💪

man I'm still trying 2 figure out wot happened at Anfield lol Chelsea was lookin all sorted just 9 mins in & Alyssa Thompson scores this sick opener but Liverpool's defence is like "nah" Becca Thomas & co hold firm & then Liverpool gets a goal back before halftime thru Beata Olsson & suddenly it's game on!!! Vivianne Miedema is pure dead brilliant 2 with that sliding challenge & I'm gettin the feels 🤩💪

Draws are just part of the game lol 🤔

Think about it... Liverpool's defense was like a strong wall 🏰, Chelsea couldn't break through 🚫, then Becca Thomas and her crew were all about keeping it solid 💪. But, at the same time, I feel for Chelsea 🤗, they were on fire 🔥 before that one opener 🎯.

And then there's Arsenal... they're stuck in a rut 🌂, just can't seem to get those goals going ⚽️. Meanwhile, Leicester City is like "hey, we still exist" 😂. And lastly, it looks like Chelsea needs to recharge their batteries 💡, Manchester City's right on their tail 👀.

Also, 34-game unbeaten streak... that's no joke 🤯! And a 3-1 win for London City Lionesses? That's a big move up the table 🔝.

I think Liverpool's defence is like the ultimate game-changer, you feel? They just neutralized Chelsea's attack so much that it was almost impossible for them to create anything. And Becca Thomas is literally the anchor of their team 🤩. On the other hand, I'm kinda surprised Arsenal couldn't find a way out of their slump despite dominating possession... maybe they need a bit more time to get back on track? 🤔

🤔 Chelsea's strong run was nice while it lasted but they needed to be more clinical in front of goal 🚫. Liverpool's defence was solid 👍, especially Becca Thomas leading the pack 💪. That equaliser before halftime was a big turning point 🕰️ and Vivianne Miedema's sliding challenge was pure class 🤩. Can't say I'm surprised Arsenal are struggling 🙅‍♂️, they've been inconsistent all season ⏰. Leicester City's 21-game winless run on the road is just brutal 😷.

😊 so Chelsea's unbeaten run just ended and I gotta say it's pretty impressive how Liverpool's defense held strong against their attack. Becca Thomas is definitely showing off her leadership skills out there 🙌. And that equaliser from Beata Olsson was pure magic 🔮. What's more, Vivianne Miedema's sliding tackle was the turning point in the game - I mean who expects to see a player make such an incredible challenge in the box?! 😲

I gotta say, this draw between Liverpool and Chelsea is like a microcosm of what's going on with football right now 🤔. We got this massive underdog story with Liverpool holding off a strong attack from Chelsea, kinda like how some teams are saying they can't be counted out in the league table, but it's just not happening 💪.

But you know who's been getting away with murder? The refs in that Arsenal vs Tottenham game 👀. That back-to-back draw is just suspicious, if you ask me. And then there's this Leicester City slump... they're like the party poopers of the league, always finding a way to lose 🤦‍♀️.

Meanwhile, West Ham Women finally breaking out of their shell? That's what I call a power move 💁‍♀️! London City Lionesses moving up in the ranks? That's some serious competition brewing 🔥. And don't even get me started on Chelsea's slump... they're like the ultimate underdog story 😂.

It's all about context, people. You can't just look at the stats and say that team A is better than team B. There's politics in every game, and I'm here to break it down 📰!

The WSL is getting more unpredictable by the minute 🤯. Chelsea's unbeaten streak got smashed right before our eyes, and I'm kinda impressed with Liverpool's defense 💪 - Becca Thomas and co. really came up big in that match!

But seriously, can't help but feel a bit bad for Chelsea... all that momentum lost 💔. And what about Arsenal? They're stuck in this slump after two tough draws 🤦‍♀️. Maybe they just need to tweak their strategy or something?

On the bright side, Leicester's 21-game losing streak is absolutely atrocious 😂 - and West Ham Women finally broke through with that win! London City Lionesses are on a roll too 💪!

Still can't help but wonder what Chelsea needs to do to get back on track... they've got Manchester City breathing down their necks 🚨

The eerie symmetry of it all... Liverpool's defence, just like life itself, can be unpredictable & unforgiving. One minute you're cruising along, feeling invincible, the next your walls are breached & you're scrambling to keep up. Chelsea's attacking effort was like a wild storm, but their own resilience (or lack thereof?) ultimately led to their downfall. I mean, who hasn't been in that situation where they feel like they're drowning & can't find a lifeline? The thrill of the comeback is always intoxicating... but what about when it doesn't happen? Does that just lead to more questions than answers? 😔

🏆💪 Liverpool's defense was 🔒💯 solid against Chelsea 🤔, but that opening goal by Alyssa Thompson 😱 was a 💥 game-changer! Becca Thomas 👑 and her team really marshaled the ship ⛴️ to keep it 0-0. Then Beata Olsson's strike 🎉 was pure magic ✨, sending Anfield wild 🌳🎶! Vivianne Miedema 🤩 saved the day with that sliding block 😲, and Bunny Shaw 🔥 was a spark plug 💡 throughout! 💕

omg can you believe how amazing Liverpool's defence was today!!! 😱 34-game unbeaten streak for Chelsea and they just couldn't break down Becca Thomas & co 🙄. I mean, Alyssa Thompson's goal was straight fire but Liverpool's backline just refused to give up 💪. And Vivianne Miedema was the real MVP 👏 sliding challenge on Julia Zigiotti Olme, wow! what a player she is 🤩 and then that cutting-through ball for Bunny Shaw... I don't know how they didn't score more goals 🤷‍♀️. Chelsea's downfall was their inability to create clear-cut chances after halftime 🤦‍♀️. and can we talk about Arsenal's slump 😔 back-to-back draws and still no clear chances created? what's going on with them?! 🙄

I'm loving this season of women's football! The fact that Liverpool was able to hold off Chelsea's strong attack and equalize just before halftime was massive 🤩. And Vivianne Miedema making that incredible sliding challenge in the second half was pure artistry 🎨. I think it's so important for teams like Chelsea, who have been on a hot streak, to regroup and refocus after a tough loss. It's not all sunshine and rainbows out there in the league, but I'm stoked to see some intense competition brewing ⚽️.

🤔 I'm telling you, something fishy is going on with Liverpool's defense 🙃. They just shut down Chelsea's attack like it was nothing, but I think there must be more to it than meets the eye 😏. And that Becca Thomas, she's got some serious skills, almost like she's being protected by...I don't know, some unseen force? 🤝 Anyway, this game just goes to show that even with a 34-game unbeaten streak, you can still get beat if your defense isn't on point 🚫. And what about those new players Chelsea brought in at halftime? Were they trying to distract the ref or something? 🤑 This whole thing is just too suspicious for my taste 😳

omg u guys i cant even right now lol chelsea just lost 8 games in a row lol what is going on with ur team ? Liverpool was so solid on defense and it paid off big time. Alyssa Thompson came out swinging but couldn't get past Becca Thomas lol she's like the real deal 🤩 also that sliding challenge by Vivianne Miedema 😲 i mean what a save! Chelsea needs to regroup ASAP or they'll be in trouble with City breathing down their necks 💔
