Ariana Grande Set for Star-Studded Debut in Sunday in the Park With George
Singer and actress Ariana Grande will make her highly anticipated stage debut in Stephen Sondheim's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Sunday in the Park With George, alongside co-star Jonathan Bailey. The highly talked-about production is now officially announced to take place at the Barbican Centre in London this summer.
Grande, best known for her role as Glinda in the Wicked films, will be seen playing a character inspired by the famous pointillist Georges Seurat's artwork, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Jonathan Bailey, who won critical acclaim for his portrayal of Fiyero in the Netflix series Bridgerton and also starred as the lead role in the West End production of Sondheim's Company, will share the stage with Grande.
The upcoming production will be directed by acclaimed theatre director Marianne Elliott, who previously worked with Bailey on an acclaimed version of Company. The show has a book written by Sondheim's long-time collaborator James Lapine and features an intricate narrative about the artist Seurat and his model Dot.
Grande's stage performance will mark her debut in London theatre. In the coming months, she is set to play 10 nights at the O2 arena as part of her Eternal Sunshine tour.
Sunday in the Park With George originally opened on Broadway in 1984 with an all-star cast that included Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters, before making its way to London's National Theatre in 1990. The musical experienced a revival at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London in 2005, which was initially intended for a West End transfer at the Savoy theatre but ultimately fell victim to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Tickets will be made available in May, with further casting announcements set to follow later on.
