Frederick: Should J.J. McCarthy be Vikings 2026 starting QB? Depends on Brian Flores

As the Vikings' brass weighs their options for the 2026 season quarterback position, one name has been on everyone's mind - J.J. McCarthy. Can he be the team's starting signal caller? The answer hinges on the return of veteran defensive coordinator Brian Flores.

Flores' influence can't be overstated in Minnesota's defense. If he were to leave for a head coaching gig or take a lateral move, it could significantly impact the team's ability to compete. A drop-off on that end would render McCarthy's development irrelevant, as average play under center wouldn't vault the Vikings into higher stratosphere.

On one hand, McCarthy showed flashes of brilliance last season - escapability, arm strength, passion, and making plays in big moments. However, he also struggled with inaccuracy, inconsistency, poor decision-making, and staying on the field. The overall consensus was that his performance was not great, especially for a team expected to contend.

One argument is that McCarthy's growth potential could make him an attractive project for an average or below-average team like Minnesota. If Flores returns and feels the Vikings have the personnel to compete, quarterback insurance must be acquired. Punting on contention for another season in favor of McCarthy's development might not be worth it.

The real key to McCarthy's future lies with coach Kevin O'Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. When making a decision on the quarterback room, they should prioritize the defense. If they still believe they have a championship-level defense, a move must be made under center, regardless of the costs.

For now, it seems that McCarthy's fate is tied to Flores' plans. Only time will tell if he can become the Vikings' solution at quarterback or if Minnesota needs to upgrade the position.

I feel like the Vikings are trying to make a bold move with J.J. McCarthy. On one hand, his athleticism and ability to make plays are pretty enticing. But on the other hand, consistency is key in the QB position. I mean, how many times did he get benched last season? It's gotta be tough for him to bounce back from that.

And yeah, Flores' influence can't be overstated - their defense was pretty solid last year. If they lose him, it could make a big difference. But if McCarthy does develop into the QB they're hoping for... that would be sick! 🤯

Meh, I think the Vikes need a solid defense first 🤔🛡️. If they get that sorted out, McCarthy might be able to shine 🌟💫. But if Flores is gone and the D's all over the place, it's gonna be tough for J.J. to make waves 🌊😬. The Vikes need to find a way to keep their defense solid ⚔️👍 before they can focus on QB insurance 📝💸. McCarthy has potential, but he needs the right support around him 💪🏽🤝.

🤔 I'm not sure about J.J. McCarthy being the answer for us yet 🚫 He had some awesome moments last season but struggled with a lot of things too 😬 Like, what's going on with his decision-making? It's like he's all over the place 🔄 And if Flores is back and we're good to go on defense, I don't think McCarthy's growth will be enough to take us to the top 💪 We need someone who can consistently put the ball in our QBs' hands, not someone who's gonna turn it over or get sacked all game 😳

I'm thinking what's with all this J.J. McCarthy hype? I mean, the guy showed some good stuff last season but was still pretty mediocre overall 🤔. If Brian Flores comes back and the defense is on point, can they really afford to go with a QB who struggles with consistency and accuracy? 🤷‍♂️ On one hand, maybe he's got potential as a project for a team looking to rebuild, but that doesn't necessarily mean Minnesota should hold onto him. They need to prioritize their defense first 🚨, and if they don't have a solid QB, it's time to make a change 💪

I'm all about J.J. McCarthy being the future QB for the Vikings but its gonna be tough without Brian Flores on board 🤔🏈. If they don't have a solid defense, I dont think McCarthy can lead them to the top. The kid showed some promise last season but he also had some major flaws that held him back. What's more important is what Kevin O'Connell and Kwesi Adofo-Mensah are gonna do with him - do they prioritize the defense?

idk why ppl are so hyped about JJ McCarthy being the vikings QB... sounds like he's got some legit issues with accuracy and decision-making 😐 his growth potential is cool and all, but if flores leaves, that defense is gonna be a major problem. i think mccarthy needs to prove himself more before kevin o'connell and kwesi adofo-mensah make a move... maybe they should focus on getting some solid WRs or O linemen instead of throwing all their hopes on one QB 🤷‍♂️

🤔 I don't know about this J.J. McCarthy guy... I mean, sure, he showed some nice skills last season, but let's be real, his inaccuracy and decision-making are pretty major red flags 🚨. And what's with the Vikings relying on one person to solve all their QB problems? It feels like they're putting all their eggs in one basket... or should I say, in one quarterback's pocket 🥚. What if Flores doesn't come back? Or what if McCarthy just doesn't pan out as expected? They need a more solid plan in place, not just "hoping for the best" 💭.
